Twenty-five peonies in Dubai: after the paper comes off
Summer air near the coast reaches 40 °C and holds humidity with it. The drive across the city is short and the heat around it is not, so the question that decides a count this size is how long the box stays warm. Everything the recipient does in the first hour follows from that.
We add insulated packing and keep the box out of direct sun for the whole run. Downtown, Business Bay, Marina, JBR, Palm Jumeirah and DIFC all sit inside the 2 to 4 hour window, and we work 9 AM to 10 PM.
Heat also decides what leaves the bench. Twenty-five heads packed together hold warmth between them, so a bunch cut half open in June arrives further along than the same bunch would in February. In the hot months we send tighter buds and say so in advance, because a closed dome on the doorstep is easier to explain than a blown one. Peonies reach us from the Netherlands outside the season, and by the time we tie them they have already spent days in transit.

The bouquet needs a container waiting for it, because twenty-five thick stems will not go into whatever narrow vase is already on the shelf. A wide neck, a heavy base and plenty of cold water, changed daily, with the stems recut at an angle each time. Tell the recipient to get the flowers into water rather than into a photograph first. Peonies out of water go soft quickly and a warm room speeds that up. An hour standing in paper on a hot afternoon costs a day at the other end.

What to have ready
- A vessel wide enough for twenty-five stems.
- A cool corner, away from the window and out of the air conditioning flow.
- Somebody at the address who can manage both within the hour.
Offices in DIFC are the case where none of that is likely. Nobody at a reception desk wants to be responsible for finding a bucket, so for a business handover we send the version with its own water supply at the base and cut the stems to suit it. Family dates and hotel rooms in Downtown and Marina go the other way, since there is a tap and a surface. The useful question at the point of ordering is which of those two the address really is.
After the first hour it becomes a daily routine and a short one. Change the water instead of topping it up, take the stems back a little each time, and keep hands off the open heads.
What goes inside the dome follows the same logic. A single colour reads strongest at this count, and two close shades stop it looking flat under evening lamps. Peony foliage from the same stems is frame enough, and leaves added to fill gaps usually mean the heads were mismatched in size. Three or four shades at this volume read as several smaller bouquets pushed together.
Say which address takes the delivery and who will be standing next to it. Twenty-five peonies in Dubai are a straightforward order for a home with a wide vase and an awkward one for a desk without a tap, and we build a different bouquet for each.
