Five peonies in Dubai: the neck of the vessel decides it
A small count is judged almost entirely by what it stands in. Five heavy heads on straight stems have no mass to hold themselves together, so the container does the work that a large bunch does on its own. Get the neck wrong and the stems splay against the glass within an hour.
A peony stem is thick, hollow and fairly rigid, and it does not bend to sit neatly against a wall of glass. Five of them need a neck narrow enough to gather the stems at one point, which keeps the heads over the centre of the vessel instead of hanging off the rim.
A bunch of five is the one count a courier hands over with a single hand, and that changes the doorstep. Nothing has to be turned stems first through a frame, and the recipient can take it while holding a phone. It comes out of a small box in one movement, which is why so many of these go to office desks and hotel front desks without any fuss at all.
Too wide, and the bunch collapses outwards into a flat ring of heads. Too narrow is the other failure, and it is the more common one. Peony stems are broad, the cut ends need water reaching them from all sides, and five crammed into a slim neck press against each other, seal off the flow and begin drinking unevenly. A neck that takes the gathered stems with a little slack around them is the working answer. Anybody buying a vessel for this count should hold the stems against it before cutting anything.

Addresses across the city
Downtown, Business Bay, Marina, JBR, Palm Jumeirah and DIFC all sit inside the 2 to 4 hour window. A bunch of five travels more easily than a large one, since the heads do not press on each other in the box and there is no outer ring to mark. What it does not survive is being left somewhere.
Business Bay and DIFC take this count mostly as a desk gift between colleagues. Downtown, Marina, JBR and Palm Jumeirah addresses lean the other way, and there the bunch usually goes straight into a home.
Four things worth telling us along with the address:
- The building and the floor.
- Whether somebody is in. Five peonies left at a desk in their wrapping will still be in that wrapping hours later, and in this climate that is the difference between a good week and a short one.
- Whether there is any container at the address at all, a jug included.
- Whether the flowers are expected or a surprise.

Peonies come here from the Netherlands outside the season, and five stems from that batch are cut to the same stage as fifty would be. The difference is that with five you notice every one of them.
