### Black roses in Dubai: the first hour after the box is opened Nothing grows black. What is sold under the name is either a very dark burgundy variety that reads black in ordinary indoor light, or a white rose finished with dye, and the second kind asks for a small amount of care that no other bunch of roses asks for. None of it is difficult, and all of it happens in the first hour. The dye sits on the surface, not inside it. #### Unwrapping Take the wrapping off over a hard surface rather than a bed or a rug. A sprayed head sheds a little dry pigment when it is handled, and that dust is invisible until it lands on something pale. A kitchen worktop, a bathroom counter or a desk all work. A hotel bedspread does not, and that is where most people open a delivery because it is the nearest flat thing in the room. Cut the stems with the flowers held away from your body. Anyone who has trimmed a bunch of dyed roses while wearing a white shirt learns this once and never needs telling twice. Wash your hands afterwards, before touching anything else. Dry pigment comes off skin easily. The same pigment on damp skin does not, and it transfers to the next thing that gets picked up, which in a hotel room is usually a towel. #### Where the box actually gets opened The address decides how much of this matters. A hotel room in Downtown, Marina or Palm Jumeirah is pale linen from wall to wall, and it belongs to somebody else, which makes it the least forgiving place to unwrap a dyed bunch. A DIFC office is safer in one way and worse in another, since desks are hard surfaces but they are covered in paper. An apartment is the easy case, because the person opening the box knows which surfaces they are prepared to risk. Most of these orders are placed by somebody who will not be in the room when the box is opened. A business handover in Business Bay, a milestone birthday at a hotel, a delivery to a colleague on a family date: in all of them the sender is elsewhere, and none of the handling above is obvious to a person meeting dyed flowers for the first time.
