### Coffee roses in Dubai: a surface that remembers every touch These cultivars are no more fragile than any other rose. What sets them apart is a matte, pale surface that records contact, so most of what goes wrong with them at home happens in the first minute after the box is opened. Carry the bunch by the stems. Lifting it by the wrapping puts a hand across the heads, and pulling the flowers out through the paper drags every outer petal against it, which is the one movement that leaves a mark on all of them at once. Three habits cover the rest: - take the paper off the bunch rather than pulling the bunch out of the paper; - fill the vase before the flowers go in, never after, since a splash that dries on a pale petal leaves a visible ring; - mist nothing at all, whatever the care card of some other bouquet may have said. > "Nobody damages these roses by neglecting them. Open the box on a table rather than on the floor or on a knee, because most of the contact marks we are shown afterwards came from a bunch being balanced against somebody while they looked for scissors. It goes to people whose taste already runs that way: a studio opening, a photographer, an architect, a man who has never been sent flowers, a home built around wood and linen. Sent to somebody hoping for a bright, obvious bunch, coffee roses land as faded. Nobody says so out loud, which is why we ask about the recipient before we agree the shade. Interior orders are the other steady half. Those are placed for a room instead of a person, and there the palette does something a coloured bouquet cannot, since it sits inside a scheme rather than arriving as a visitor in it. Repeat work is where the colour really lives. Studios, showrooms and apartments that keep flowers as part of the furnishing order it on a schedule instead of for a date, and we build the same recipe each time so that the room does not change character between one delivery and the next. #### Heat, humidity and the drive Summer air reaches 40 °C and the coast carries high humidity with it. Every box goes out with an insulated liner and stays out of the sun, and delivery across the city takes 2-4 hours. Humidity is the part that matters for this palette specifically. Moisture that settles on a pale petal and then dries leaves the same ring a splash from a jug would, so we keep these bunches wrapped until they are indoors and we do not hand them over on a balcony or beside an open door. That is also why we ask for a room and not only an address. A bunch handed to somebody standing outside at midday in Marina or JBR takes on moisture before it ever reaches a vase, and on this palette the result shows up the next morning as faint rings across the outer petals. Cool water in a clean vase, a fresh angled cut, and a week to two is a fair expectation for the flowers themselves. Tell us who is receiving them and what the room looks like. This is one of the few palettes where a bouquet can be technically perfect and still be the wrong gift, and that judgement is easier to make before the stems are cut than after the box has been opened.
