### Purple roses in Dubai: the colour that disappears beside its neighbours A purple rose behaves badly in company. It is the one shade in a mixed arrangement that can vanish outright, not because it is weak but because so many other flowers sit within half a step of it. At three paces the eye stops separating them. #### The shades that swallow it Burgundy is the worst offender by some distance. Deep red and deep purple carry the same darkness, so once they touch, the arrangement turns into a single dark mass with no shape inside it. Nothing is wrong with either colour on its own. Put them together in one bunch and you have paid for two and received one. Blue is the second problem. Dyed blue in particular meets purple somewhere in the middle, and what should read as contrast reads as a smudge instead. The two shades are close enough that a room with warm lighting collapses the difference completely. Then there are the quieter losses. Lilac chrysanthemum from the UAE greenhouses sits almost exactly on top of a lilac rose, and a dark tulip does the same thing from the other side of the tone. None of this is visible in a photograph taken at close range, which is why so many mixes get approved on a phone and disappoint in a hall. #### Where these arrangements are going The address settles most of the argument before the flowers do. A DIFC office sees the bouquet from a metre away across a reception counter, and fine differences of tone still register there. A hotel room in Downtown, Marina or Palm Jumeirah is a small space with a single lamp in it, and everything dark in that room goes darker. A family date at home is the easiest case of the three, because the arrangement is looked at from every distance over several days and has time to be understood. Business handovers are where this goes wrong most expensively. An arrangement built for a boardroom gets looked at once, by several people, in the moment before somebody starts speaking, and a purple that has already merged with a dark neighbour never earns a second look.
