Nineteen roses in Dubai: deep water first, unwrapping second

Nineteen roses standing in deep water before the wrapping comes off, Dubai

An hour in a cool room and a full vase restore the pressure the stems lost on the road. Do that before anything else, including taking the paper off. After that the flowers forgive most of what follows.

Then take off every leaf that would sit below the waterline, recut each stem at an angle with a sharp knife, and put the bunch back. Nineteen roses drink steadily, so the level drops visibly overnight for the first two days. Top it up rather than waiting for it to look low. A vase that runs dry seals the cuts, and a sealed stem does not start drinking again on its own.

Change the water every day or two. Wash the vessel when you do, because a film from the last bouquet clouds fresh water within a day. On this count the vase does more work than the variety of rose does.

"In summer the first thing we say on the phone is water, not vase. The vase can wait an hour, the water cannot."

Where a bouquet waits in this city

If flowers have to stand somewhere before they reach the person they are for, the safe place is a cool interior corridor. A car park is the worst of the options and a balcony in summer is close behind. Outside temperatures reach 40 °C with high humidity along the coast, and ten minutes in a hot cabin costs a rose more than a whole day on a cool windowsill. We deliver from 9 AM to 10 PM and the drive takes 2 to 4 hours, so a bouquet has already spent time in a vehicle before anyone touches it. Everything after that is recovery.

A stairwell works when there is no corridor. What matters is still air and shade, and the street outside offers neither in the hot months. A bouquet parked in a car for the same length of time comes back a different bouquet.

Lobbies are the usual waiting room.

A box left at a hotel counter at Address Downtown, Four Seasons or Atlantis The Palm sits in air conditioning, which is the best of the realistic outcomes. A bunch in paper on an office desk in DIFC does not, and by evening the outer heads say so. Business Bay is the same story with a different lift.

Florist recutting rose stems at an angle over a sink in Dubai

Family dates on Palm Jumeirah are the easy case for all of this. The flowers go from the door into a kitchen, somebody fills a vase within the hour, and the recovery happens without anyone planning it. Business handovers are the hard case. There the bouquet stands where it was put and waits on a decision nobody has made.

  • Deep water within the first hour, paper off afterwards.
  • Every leaf below the waterline removed before the stems go in.
  • A top up every day for the first two days.

Dutch roses arrive at 60 to 90 cm and Ecuadorian stems reach 120 cm, and a longer stem has a longer water column to lift. At this count a dry vase shows on the tall version by the second morning, and a head that has stopped drinking bends at the neck just below the bud. Recut that stem and lay the whole flower flat in cool water for a couple of hours, and some of them come back.

Cut roses hold for one to two weeks, and most of the gap between those two figures is decided before the flowers reach a vase at all. If 19 roses in Dubai are going somewhere nobody will be for a few hours, order them in a box so the water travels with them. Tell us the arrival time and we build to it.
