Silver bouquets in Phuket: two different things sold under one word

Silver treated roses standing in clear water in a Phuket workshop

There is silver that belongs to a plant and silver that was applied an hour before the bouquet went out. Neither is dishonest. They behave nothing alike once they are standing in water, and a buyer who does not know which one is in the wrapping has no way to predict the second week.

Grey foliage gets its colour from a fine coat of hairs or wax on the leaf itself. Nothing rubs off, nothing sheds, and the tone holds until the leaf dries out. That kind of silver also has opinions about its neighbours: put ordinary bright green next to it and the grey reads as faded, as though the bunch had been sitting about for a week, while against deep red, near black or plain white the same leaf looks deliberate.

"The word silver tells you what a bouquet looks like today. It says nothing about what it looks like on Friday."

— JFLOO florist

Applied silver is the version most orders actually mean, and its lifespan is the lifespan of the flowers underneath it. A thin coat blocks a little light and slows the bloom down, which is why a sprayed rose opens more gradually than the same rose left alone. A thick one glues the petal edges and the bud never opens at all.

Vase water gives nothing away either way here. Paint sits on the outside of a petal and stays there, so a clear jug on the second day proves only that nobody dyed the stems, and it is a poor test to rely on.

How this plays out on the island

Payment goes by bank card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PromptPay, bank transfer or cash to the courier in baht.

The silver we send out here is applied, and the pale base under it comes from imported roses, with chrysanthemums giving a flatter, more even surface and Thai orchids carrying the tone on a long branch. Hydrangeas take a coat as well, though a broad head shows an extra layer sooner than a tight one does, so those get sprayed lighter.

Tropical foliage goes in with its own colour, dark and low at the base of the bunch. That contrast is what makes the treated heads read as metal rather than as a grey haze over everything.

Humidity is the local complication and it works on the coat rather than on the flower. Air at 25 to 33 °C with damp in it keeps fresh paint from setting quickly, so the bouquet stands to dry before it is boxed. Skipping that step is how colour ends up on the paper, on the box and on the hands of whoever carried it.

Silver bouquet delivered to a villa terrace on the west coast of Phuket

Rain finishes what humidity starts. The monsoon runs May to October, and one drop leaves a matte mark on a metallic surface that will not come out, so wet season runs go boxed and get opened under a roof.

Phone cameras treat the two kinds differently, which matters because most of these bouquets get photographed at a dinner table. A grown grey leaf holds its detail on a screen. A metallic coat throws back whatever light is nearest, so a candle turns the whole bunch amber and a ceiling spot puts a hard white patch across the heads. Anyone planning a photograph is better off taking it before the room dims.

The west coast takes 90 to 180 minutes, with villas, marinas and airport routes on their own windows, and on the hill roads in the evening we add time to the route rather than promise an hour we cannot hold. Orders start at 2200 THB.

Silver bouquets in Phuket go to anniversaries, formal dinners and evening handovers far more often than to casual birthdays. We work 9 AM to 10 PM. Say which of the two silvers you are after when you order, because the answer changes the price, the build and how long the thing stays looking the way it did on arrival.
