White baskets in Phuket: the colour that can be built at short notice

Ask for a large arrangement in coral, in deep burgundy or in true blue on a Tuesday afternoon and the honest answer depends on what came in that week. Ask for white at the same size and the answer is yes.

Every commercial flower crop includes a white variety, and the white forms tend to be the dependable ones rather than the specialities.

That matters more for a basket than for a bouquet, and the reason is arithmetic. A hand tied bunch needs a dozen or so stems in the leading shade. A container arrangement needs several times that, all reading as one colour, all opening at roughly the same pace, and it has to hold that appearance for as long as the composition stands rather than for one evening.

So it is a supply question before it is a design question. A shade arriving in small quantities can be built into a bouquet out of a single box, but filling a large basket with it means either mixing varieties that do not quite match or waiting for the next delivery. White removes that constraint, which is exactly why it turns up on short deadlines and at the largest sizes.

What that means on an island

Nothing here is grown down the road. Thai orchids are the closest thing to a local certainty and they carry white reliably, imported roses and chrysanthemums cover the body of most builds, hydrangeas give volume, and seasonal peonies arrive when they arrive. Between them a white arrangement of almost any size is buildable without a wait, and that is not true of every shade a client might name.

Four situations turn up often enough to be worth planning for:

• A wedding booked at short notice, where a colour scheme has not been agreed and white is the answer that cannot be wrong.
• A resort event where the venue's own palette is pale and the flowers are expected to sit inside it rather than argue.
