Bright bouquets in Phuket: how long the colour actually lasts
Strong colour and long vase life do not always travel together, and the mix is what decides how long the whole thing looks right. That question gets asked less often than it should, usually because the bouquet is chosen from a photograph taken on the morning it was built.
Air at 25 to 33 °C shortens every answer. West coast runs take 90 to 180 minutes, villas, marinas and airport routes have their own windows, and during monsoon showers from May to October or on the hill roads in the evening we add route time. All of that happens while the heads are opening, so we build with tighter buds and wider gaps than the finished picture shows.

What holds and what fades
Chrysanthemums are the workhorse of this category. Dense pigment runs through the petal, they hold their shape well after the showier stems have gone over, and they keep an arrangement together for the second half of its life.
Imported roses in deep shades carry the mass. Hydrangeas fill volume in a single stem and are also the honest route to blue, because no rose and no chrysanthemum makes blue pigment, so anything sold in that colour was dyed after cutting and fades in patches.
Seasonal peonies are the opposite kind of choice. They are the flower somebody wants specifically, and we treat them as the short, showy part of the build rather than its backbone.
Three habits keep a bright arrangement looking right for longer:
- Change the water rather than topping it up.
- Recut the stems at an angle every couple of days.
- Take out any head that has finished, before it pulls the eye.
Soft hollow stems have their own rule. Once the water sours they bend at the neck, so they want a clean vase and shallow water rather than a deep one, and that single change buys more days than any additive.
Who they suit here
Resort birthdays, a welcome after a long flight, a family date where the reaction should happen at the door. Anyone who dresses in colour and would find a pale bouquet forgettable.
They also earn their place through the wet months. When the light outside stays flat for days, one saturated arrangement changes a room more than the same flowers would in a bright week.
The format has a requirement in return. It pulls attention towards itself, so it argues with patterned textiles and pictures on the wall, and it needs a plain light background and clear space around it.
Where it works less well is a restrained occasion. Deep colour speaks louder than a half tone, wrapping does not soften it, and the shade is read before anything else about the gift is noticed. For those we would steer you towards something quieter and say why.
