Red roses in Phuket: water, warmth and the first hour

Red roses in a clean vase in an air conditioned room in Phuket

Where a bouquet lands in the seven to fourteen day spread depends far more on its first hour than on the price of the stems. That hour is entirely in the hands of whoever opens the box, and almost nobody is told what to do with it.

Three things cover most of it:

  • cold water in a vase that has actually been scrubbed, not just rinsed
  • a fresh cut across each stem at an angle, made just before it goes in
  • no leaves left below the water line, since those are what turn the water cloudy by the second day.

Warmth is the other half of the story, and here it is not a seasonal problem. A rose opens on heat and holds on cool. Temperatures on the island sit between 25 and 33 °C all year, so a bouquet standing in a warm room with sun on it will run through its entire life in half its usual time, while the same bouquet spending its nights in an air conditioned room comes back each morning looking freshly delivered.

"Guests ask what we put in the water. Nothing that beats a cold vase and a room with the air conditioning left on overnight."

Orders start from 2200 THB, and payment goes by bank card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PromptPay, bank transfer or cash to the courier in baht.

The invisible problem in a resort room

Fruit in the same room shortens things too. Ripening fruit gives off a gas that makes petals drop early, and a welcome bowl of fruit sharing a table with the vase is a genuine and completely invisible problem in exactly the rooms where our flowers most often end up.

Moving one of the two solves it. Neither the fruit nor the flowers need to leave the room, only to stop sharing a table.

Hotels handle all of this better than private addresses do. Housekeeping changes water without being asked and a vase in a serviced room rarely ends up outside, so the bouquets that fail early are almost always the ones sent to a villa where nobody was told what to do with them.

The balcony is the other habit worth breaking. A vase carried outside for a photograph and then forgotten there spends the afternoon in direct sun, and a red bouquet loses days to that in a way nobody connects to the photograph later.

Getting them there in the first place

Red roses beside a shaded window rather than on a sunlit balcony in Kata, Phuket

The west coast runs on a 90-180 minute window, with villas, marinas and airport routes quoted separately. From May to October the rain arrives in bursts and evening traffic on the hill roads gets extra time built into the route rather than an optimistic promise.

Red travels well through all of that. The stems are usually sturdy, the colour does not show handling marks, and a box that has been closed the whole way arrives with the heads in the same state they left in.

None of the care needs a schedule either. Change the water when it stops being clear, recut the ends while you are doing it, and keep the vase out of the sun in between.

What the drive does cost is water. Every hour in a box is an hour the stems are not drinking, which is why we ask that the bouquet go into a vase before anything else happens to it. Delivery hours are 9 AM to 10 PM.

Tell us whether anybody will be in the room when the courier arrives. If the answer is no, we would rather deliver later than have red roses in Phuket sit wrapped through the warmest part of the afternoon, and shifting a delivery by a couple of hours costs nothing while the alternative costs the second week.
