Flowers in an envelope in Phuket: what the plane will take

Orchid sprays laid in a single layer inside a paper envelope in Phuket

The flat build accepts a narrower list of flowers than any other format, and on this island the list gets narrower still. A strong side profile is the requirement. A heavy round head fights the plane, lifts off the paper and takes the crease on the way.

Thai orchids answer that better than anything else we have. The spray is already close to flat, it lies in a single layer without argument, and it holds a line across the face of the envelope from one edge to the other.

Most of the rest of the local mix is round. Imported roses, chrysanthemums, hydrangeas and seasonal peonies are all built the wrong way for this, so they go in short, in small numbers, or not at all. That is not a shortage. It is what the format costs, and knowing it before the order saves a conversation afterwards.

"I can build you an envelope of roses. I would rather build you one of orchids and have it look the same on arrival as it did on the bench."

Foliage goes in narrow and long. A broad tropical leaf swallows the whole face of the envelope and turns the gift into a parcel of greenery with something behind it.

Stem count, and why it stays low

An envelope is not a small version of a large bouquet. It is a composition read like a page, left to right, and stems added past a certain point turn it into an untidy sheaf.

Every stem also has its own patch of paper behind it, which means there is no second row to hide anything in. Grading happens one head at a time: shade, stage of opening, length. All of them are cut to the same length before they go down, since a fan cut by eye sags at one edge the moment the paper is lifted.

Fewer stems, longer bench time. The bill lands in a different place than customers expect.

How it travels, and where it fits

A flat parcel handles a car better than an open bouquet. It does not roll, it has no heads sticking out to catch on a door frame, and it goes past a desk and into a lift without anyone rearranging it. Along the west coast that means 90 to 180 minutes, with separate windows for villas, marinas and airport routes, and during monsoon showers from May to October we add route time and send it inside a closed sleeve so the paper stays dry until the courier is under cover.

There is no water inside. The cut ends travel dry, which is fine for a delivery and not fine for a day of meetings, so the stems want trimming and a vase within the hour of arrival. We work 9 AM to 10 PM, and on UTC+7 with no daylight saving, so a sender in another country can fix the hour without recalculating anything.

Most of these orders go to a hotel desk, a marina office or a lobby at Rosewood Phuket, The Slate Phuket or Veranda Resort Phuket. In all of them a courier hands over one flat object without a conversation, and the person it belongs to picks it up on the way out.

The card is part of it rather than an extra. It sits inside the same fold, above the stems, so it is read before the flowers are lifted.

Orders start from 2200 THB and payment goes by bank card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PromptPay, bank transfer or cash in THB. Tell us who takes it and when, and if the answer is a desk rather than a person, ask us to write the name on the outside of the fold.
