Roses by stem length in Phuket: the case for the short bunch

People order the longest stem the budget allows and treat that as the decision made. Length is a fit measurement rather than a grade, and on this island it also has to survive a drive. Work backwards from the surface the flowers will stand on and the answer arrives on its own.

Short stems lose that argument on a product page and win it at the address. They are the length we suggest most often for rooms nobody has seen.

Where a short bunch belongs

Small surfaces are the obvious case: a desk, a bedside cabinet, a side table in a resort room where the flat space is already taken by everything else a guest arrived with. Those bouquets are seen from above and from close range, which is a different job from being seen across a room. Calibration matters more than height there. A short bunch also fits the shelf it ends up on without anyone having to move a lamp.

A dinner by the sea is the second case. A low bunch sits below eye level and people can talk across it, which a tall arrangement in the middle of a table never allows.

Stability comes into it as well. A compact bouquet in a low, heavy vase stays where it is put, and it is the safer choice for a villa with children in the house or a table on an open terrace. Anything tall standing in moving air needs weight underneath it that a resort room rarely has to offer.

Four addresses cover most of what we deliver at this length:

• An airport arrival, where the flowers are carried through a terminal and then held in a car.
• A resort room in Patong, Kata or Karon before check-in.
• A birthday dinner at a table by the water, where nothing on the table should block a face.
• A family date at a house in Rawai or Chalong, which is the one address where somebody can walk over, look at the vase in the cupboard and tell us how tall it actually is.

Getting it there

The road is the other half of this.

Along the west coast we work in a 90 to 180 minute window, covering Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Surin and Bang Tao, with Phuket Town, Rawai and Chalong on the same board. Villas, marinas and airport routes have their own windows. From May to October monsoon showers add time to a route, and evening traffic on the hill roads does the same, so a fixed hour gets a reserve built into it. A short bouquet takes all of that better than a long one, since the lever between the cut and the head is smaller and the stem is not working against itself on every bend. Compact packing also fits a car boot that already has luggage in it.

At the usual 25 to 33 °C the box stays closed from the workshop to the door. Roses share that box with whatever else is in the build, and the tropical foliage, orchids or chrysanthemums beside them set their own height, so we match the rose to the tallest thing in the arrangement rather than to the catalogue band.

Whatever length is chosen, the bouquet gets shorter through the week, since every recut takes a little more off the stem. If the height matters for a particular evening, say the date and we will cut one step longer than the measurement suggests.
