Tall roses in Phuket: the failure with a name

Long rose stems standing deep in buckets of clean water in a Phuket workshop

Every flower shop knows this one. The head folds over an inch or two below the bud while the petals still look perfectly fresh, and a bouquet that stood upright at night is drooping by morning. Florists call it bent neck, and long stems get it far more often than short ones.

The cause is a shortfall. Water arrives at the bud more slowly than it evaporates from the petals and leaves, and on a long stem the margin is thin enough that one setback is usually enough.

Blocked vessels at the cut will do it. So will an air lock drawn in while the stem was out of water, or warm room air pulling moisture out faster than the stem can replace it. The air here sits at 25 to 33 °C with high humidity, so a bouquet that spent an afternoon wrapped on a counter has already spent its margin. Every rose on the island is imported, which means the stems have travelled a long way before any of that begins.

That is why tall grades are held differently from the rest of the stock. They stand in deep buckets from the moment the box opens, and nothing goes into a build until it has drunk.

Four points in the journey where that margin goes.

  • The flight and the box. Stems arrive dry and go straight into deep water in the workshop.
  • The build. Tall grades are tied last, right before the courier leaves.
  • The drive. 90 to 180 minutes along the west coast, with separate windows for villas, marinas and airport routes, and route time added during the rains from May to October.
  • The wait at the other end. The one point we cannot control, and often the longest, which is why we ask who will be there to take the box.

Catching it early

Some stems recover if you act on the first morning. Recut two or three centimetres at a sharp angle, lay the whole rose flat in a sink of cool water for an hour or two so the petals take up moisture directly, then stand it back in a deep vase. The longest grades come back less often than the middle ones, which is the plain arithmetic of the distance involved.

After a full day, expect nothing.

Prevention is duller and cheaper. Get the stems into deep clean water within the first hour, keep that water clean afterwards, and most tall bouquets look after themselves.

Addresses change how much of that first hour you get. Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Bang Tao and Surin sit in the same window. A bouquet reaching one of them in the morning has the whole day in water ahead of it. An evening run out to Rawai or Mai Khao gets the same care and less time to recover in.

The workshop runs from 9 AM to 10 PM. Orders start at 2200 THB. Payment goes by bank card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PromptPay, bank transfer or cash in baht.

"A bent neck the day after delivery is almost never the box. It is the hour the bouquet spent on a table before anybody went looking for a vase."

Ask for a water pack if tall roses in Phuket are going to an airport arrival, a marina, or anywhere the bouquet waits in a car. For villas and hill addresses, tell us the hour rather than the day and we will build to that hour. If the recipient is in a hotel room, say so, because a bucket from housekeeping on the first night is worth more than a decorative vase on the third. Whatever the vessel turns out to be, fill it deep.
