Roses by colour in Phuket: the shade on the day, not the shade in the box

A rose opening over several days, inner petals paler than the outer ones, in a Phuket workshop

A rose arrives closed and opens over several days, and the colour moves with it. Order for a date and you are ordering a stage as much as a shade. That is the part of the decision the catalogue photograph cannot show you. Which direction the colour moves in is predictable, and that is the useful part.

What each colour does as it opens

The petals a bud has been hiding are usually paler than the outer ones, so an open head almost always looks softer than a closed one. Deep reds are the exception and gain density as they open.

Pinks and salmons fade a little. Creams drift towards yellow, and the green undertones some varieties carry wash out almost completely by the middle of the week.

The petal edge moves first and moves furthest. On light varieties it goes towards beige, on dark ones towards something close to black, and it is usually the edge that tells a recipient the bouquet has passed its midpoint.

Three occasions where this decides the order:

  • An airport arrival, where the flowers are seen once, in the first hour, and a tighter stage is safer.
  • A dinner or a birthday that evening, which wants heads already opening at the handover.
  • A ceremony several days after delivery, where we cut tighter on purpose and let the room do the rest.

Orders begin at 2200 THB, with bank card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PromptPay, bank transfer or cash to the courier in baht.

"People choose the colour from a photograph of a closed bud and hand the flowers over two days later. By then it is a different shade, and a softer one."

Heat, the drive and the stage we cut

Climate sets the pace of all of it.

At the usual 25 to 33 °C a bouquet opens faster indoors than the same bouquet would in a cool room, so a stage that looks right at the bench can be a stage ahead by the evening. We take that into account when a delivery is booked for a fixed hour rather than for a fixed day. Along the west coast the drive runs 90 to 180 minutes, with separate windows for villas, marinas and airport routes, and the box stays closed for the whole of it. Monsoon showers from May to October and evening traffic on the hill roads add time to the route, which is another reason we ask what hour the flowers actually change hands.

Mixed bouquet of roses, orchids and tropical foliage on a table by the sea in Phuket

Delivery runs 9 AM to 10 PM, and morning slots leave the most room to adjust.

Pale varieties are the ones to watch on a long run. Their petal edge shows every contact, while a deep red hides what a cream shows, so we pack light shades with more space around each head and open the box at the address ourselves where the handover allows it.

Companion flowers age on their own schedule. Thai orchids and chrysanthemums keep their tone while the roses beside them soften, hydrangeas change as they dry, and tropical foliage stays exactly as it started. A mixed build therefore looks less uniform on day five than it did on day one, which some people like and others do not expect.

If the colour has a job to do on a particular date, tell us the date rather than the delivery day. We will cut and pack for the stage you need at that hour, and say plainly if the shade you picked will have moved by then. A tone chosen for a Thursday and cut for a Tuesday is the most common reason a bouquet looks wrong to the person who ordered it and fine to everyone else.
