### Purple roses in Phuket: what has to stand next to them Purple survives or fails on its neighbours. On its own it is a strong colour with a lot of depth in it, and in a crowded mix it turns into a dark patch that the eye reads as a gap. The fix is not more purple. It is a row of something that breaks the contact. White is the reliable answer and it works at any distance. A line of white heads between the purple and anything dark restores the outline of every flower in the arrangement, so the shapes come back and the bunch stops behaving like one mass. There is nothing subtle about it. It separates without the formality that white brings, which suits a dinner table better than an event. A light chrysanthemum is the most useful pale green tool we have on the island, since it holds its colour for as long as anything in the arrangement and takes up almost no attention of its own. Hydrangea gives a broader, softer version of the same effect and fills width at the same time. Orchids do it differently again: they carry a line the eye follows rather than a mass, so they break up a dark block without adding weight to it. Thai orchids also hold their form in local humidity, which matters over a week. Any of the three keeps a purple arrangement legible for longer than adding more roses would. Dark foliage works the other way round. Tropical greenery here is deep and glossy rather than grey, so it does not cool the flowers beside it the way a silvery leaf would. What it does is drop the background well below the purple in brightness, and the heads then read as lit objects against something darker instead of merging into it. Warm cream and peach are the last option and they change the character of the bouquet rather than just fixing it. Purple with peach reads soft and a little nostalgic. Purple with white reads clean and current. Neither is better, and the choice is worth making deliberately, because most people ordering this colour have one of the two pictures in their head without saying which.
