Housewarming flowers in Phuket: a gift that can move house

Box arrangement of orchids on a condo kitchen counter

A housewarming here usually means a lease, not a deed. Someone has taken a condo in Rawai for the season, or a villa above Chalong until the visa runs out. The party is real, the address has an end date, and a gift that ignores that date ends up in a corridor bin by March.

Bulky and permanent does not travel

A tall ceramic vase is a good gift in a flat somebody owns. In a condo held for one season it becomes an object nobody can pack and nobody feels free to bin. The same goes for a floor plant in a heavy pot. Rented walls here come with an inventory list, and the deposit is checked against it on the way out.

So we send things that can leave.

That is why most of these orders go out in their own vessel. A low arrangement in a lined box or a basket arrives already in water. Nobody hunts for a vase, nobody trims stems in the middle of their own party, and when the lease ends the container goes into the recycling.

How long the lease has to run decides the format. Four of them do most of the work, from a studio in Patong to a four-bedroom villa in Layan.

  • Orchid plant in a pot — dendrobium or phalaenopsis, weeks in flower indoors, and it moves in a footwell.
  • Low box arrangement — arrives in water, lives on a kitchen counter, asks nothing of the host.
  • Basket of tropical foliage — monstera, palm and anthurium outlast the flowers by a fortnight.
  • Sansevieria or a ZZ plant — for a condo with little daylight and a lot of cold air.

"I ask where they are in the lease before I ask what colour they like. Three months left and six months left are two different gifts."

A condo with the air conditioning on

Air conditioning in a condo here runs most of the day. What that does to a bouquet is less obvious: it dries the room as much as it cools it. Thin petals read dry air as drought long before the water runs low, which is why two arrangements at the same price can last three days apart.

Hydrangea goes first. Its head drinks through the petals as well as the stem, so cooled dry air can empty it in a day. Open peonies and blown garden roses give one good evening, then drop on the table. Lilies hold, though the scent concentrates in a closed room overnight. Chrysanthemum and anthurium barely notice. Orchids handle it best of the lot: dendrobium and mokara come off the Thai mainland, treat 33 °C as ordinary weather, and stand about a fortnight in a cooled living room.

A potted plant is the other answer, and the one that survives moving day. It goes in a footwell and gets watered at the new address. Ask first, though, if the person is weeks from a flight home, because a plant that cannot travel becomes one more thing to rehome.

The address is the harder half

Courier at the barrier of a gated condominium in Bang Tao

Most of these boxes go to a gated complex, not a street door. A courier at the barrier with a tower name and no unit number is still standing there ten minutes later. Send the building, the floor, the unit and a phone somebody will answer. Some condos in Phuket Town and Kathu hold parcels at reception, which works for a potted plant but leaves cut flowers on a counter until somebody comes down.

Distance on this island lies. The map puts about twenty kilometres between Patong and Rawai, and the road turns that into the better part of an hour, more after rain on the hill.

Housewarmings here start late, which helps. If guests are due at seven, we would rather hand over at five. On a Chalong or Rawai run we set off well before that, because the last two kilometres of a soi are slower than everything before them.

Ordering and delivery

We deliver from 9 AM to 10 PM across Phuket Town, Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Bang Tao, Surin, Rawai, Chalong and Mai Khao. The west coast window is 90 to 180 minutes. Orders start from 2200 THB: card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PromptPay, transfer or cash in baht. From May to October rain slows the hill roads, so anything pinned to a start time is safer booked a day ahead.

Tell us the complex, the unit and roughly how long the lease has to run. That last detail looks odd on an order form, and it decides whether we send housewarming flowers in Phuket as a wrapped bouquet, a box in water or something in a pot.
