Red baskets in Phuket: where it stands is where it fades
Red breaks down under ultraviolet faster than any other pigment. An arrangement in a container stays in one place for its whole life, so the spot it is put down on the first day is the spot it ages in. A bouquet gets carried around the kitchen and a bowl never moves.
The darkest varieties go first. Deep burgundy has the least saturation left in reserve, so the margins brown while the flowers themselves are still firm, and on a table near an open window that happens inside a couple of days.
Nothing about that is reversible.

Evening light flatters it
Under warm bulbs red deepens and the arrangement looks richer than it did at noon. Cool even lighting does the opposite and drags the same flowers towards a hard crimson. One bowl can therefore look like two different builds between a dinner table and a lobby counter. The photograph the sender gets back was taken under one of them and almost never under both. It is worth asking what the room is lit with before the varieties are settled.
Dinners by the sea are the easy case for red baskets in Phuket. The light is warm, the build is low, and the colour does exactly the work it was ordered for.
The road, and what it costs the flowers
Along the west coast we work to 90 to 180 minutes, which covers Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Surin and Bang Tao, with Phuket Town, Rawai, Chalong and Mai Khao on the same board. Villas, marinas and airport routes have their own windows.
During monsoon showers from May to October, and in the evening hill traffic, we add route time to every address on the run. Warm damp air inside a van is harder on a dark head than the distance is: the petal takes up moisture, the margin softens, and by the time the bowl is set down the deepest heads have lost their edge. Anything going to Trisara or Veranda Resort Phuket in the late afternoon is built and dispatched with that extra hour already counted in.
Most of it comes down to placement, and these are the questions we ask:
- which window is closest to the surface it will stand on
- whether the room is lit warm in the evening or cool all day
- whether the arrangement has to last past the night it was ordered for
We work 9 AM to 10 PM. Imported roses carry the depth of the red and hold it longest, chrysanthemums and hydrangeas fill the body where shade is unavoidable, and tropical foliage runs round the outer edge to keep the lowest heads clear of the rim. Thai orchids come in when a build needs height that will not brown at the tip.
Tell us the room and the hour. A bowl for a resort birthday in an air conditioned lobby is planted tighter than one going to an open terrace at 25 to 33 °C, and the terrace version keeps more air between the heads so the shaded ones still read as red by the end of the evening.
