101 roses in Phuket: two bundles, or fewer flowers with bigger heads

Splitting the count in half solves several problems at once, and it is the substitution people consider least often. Each bundle can be held in one arm. Each one fits an ordinary floor vessel. A pair can be carried up a flight of villa steps by one person who can still see where they are putting their feet.

It also lets two people be thanked instead of one, which suits a family date or a hotel team better than a single object somebody has to be assigned.

The loss is real and worth stating plainly. Two medium bundles read as two medium bundles, and the specific effect of a hundred flowers standing together disappears the moment they are apart.

The second substitution is the one people resist hardest and regret least. A count half the size, built from a larger headed grade on long stems, occupies close to the same visual volume and behaves far better in a car, a lift and a room. Where it fails is counting: some recipients count, most do not, and a number tied to an anniversary or an age is the one case where nothing else will do.

What the west coast road does to the choice
