Chrysanthemums last longest and mean the most different things

Two reputations follow this flower, and they contradict each other. It is the endurance champion among affordable cut flowers. It is also, in a number of countries, the flower of remembrance, which means a well meant bouquet can be read as something else entirely.

Both facts are worth holding at once, because the first makes chrysanthemum excellent value and the second occasionally rules it out.

The vase life people buy it for

Two weeks is standard. Three happens often enough that nobody in the trade finds it remarkable. The stem is thick, the head sits firmly, petals do not drop in a draught and do not crease when the bouquet is carried under an arm.

Care is minimal. Fresh cut, water to a third of the vase, lower leaves stripped. Be more aggressive with the foliage than usual, because chrysanthemum leaves wilt and smell long before the flowers show any decline.

One sensory detail is worth flagging. The foliage has a strong herbal smell that becomes noticeable in a warm room. Not everyone enjoys it, and in a small bedroom a large bunch can be overwhelming.

Spray and single head are different purchases

The distinction changes the look and the price, so it is worth knowing before browsing.

Spray chrysanthemum carries several blooms on one stem. It is voluminous, inexpensive and very good at filling space in a mixed arrangement.

Single head, sometimes sold as disbud, puts one large globe on each stem. Those are bought individually, and five or seven of them make a formal, distinctly architectural bouquet.

Petal form varies enormously between cultivars, from spider and quill types to pompons and daisy shapes. The variety name in a product description tells you more about the shape than the photograph usually does.

Choose chrysanthemum when the flowers need to keep going without anybody paying attention to them.

Where the symbolism can work against you

Across much of Europe, including France, Italy and Poland, and across Russia, white and yellow chrysanthemums belong to days of remembrance. In Japan and China the same flower signals longevity and high status. Through Central Asia and much of the Middle East the association is neutral and it is simply a flower.

The practical rule is to consider the recipient's background rather than the delivery country. A bright spray bouquet in pink, crimson or green reads as celebratory almost everywhere. A formal white single head bouquet does not.
