40 cm roses in Phuket: the grade that survives a wait

Plenty of orders on this island reach an address where nobody is in. The recipient is out on a boat, at a beach, on the road somewhere between Kata and Phuket Town, and the flowers land in an empty room or at a front desk instead. Stem length decides how well that wait goes.

Short stems wait better than tall ones.

They stand upright in almost any container a receptionist finds for them, and they do not need a bucket, a clear floor or somebody who knows what to do with a metre of stem. A tall bunch left lying on its side for an hour comes out of it with the heads already curving upwards, and that curve never straightens.

Payment settles before any of that matters. Orders start at 2200 THB, and card, Google Pay or a bank transfer closes the order while the bunch is still being tied, which is worth doing when the recipient is somewhere with no signal.

The weather is the other reason

The island runs at 25 to 33 °C in humid air, and the rainy season holds from May to October. Humid heat treats cut roses better than dry heat does, so the petal edge stays soft rather than crisping, and the real damage happens inside a warm closed box that nobody opened.

Route time is the part we plan around. Showers over the west coast and hill traffic in the evening both add minutes, and the delivery board runs 90 to 180 minutes along that coast with separate windows for villas, marinas and airport routes. A compact box takes an extra thirty minutes on the road without much argument. The same delay costs a tall bunch far more, because everything above the binding point is sitting against paper for the whole of it.

What you give up for that

Scale is the honest answer. The same head count on a long stem occupies far more air and photographs as a much bigger gift, which is why a wedding by the sea or a birthday meant to be seen across a terrace goes up a grade or two. Heads run smaller here as well, since stem length and bud size both come from the variety rather than from the way the bunch is built.

So ask which variety you are buying before you pay, particularly if somebody has promised you a large head on a short stem.

Practical points

Any ordinary glass vase does the job at roughly two thirds of the bouquet in height. Water only has to travel a short way to the bud, so the fold under the head that ruins tall roses is rare at this length.

The routine is three habits:

• change the water completely every day or two instead of topping it up
• strip every leaf that would sit below the waterline before the bunch goes in
• recut the ends at an angle with a sharp knife, over the vase rather than beside it.

Fresh roses hold one to two weeks on that. In an air conditioned room they hold a little longer, though the dry stream from the unit should not blow across the blooms.

One thing is worth settling before the order goes in. Ask whether anyone will be at the villa, the hotel room or the office in Chalong to take the box, because that answer changes the grade more than the occasion does. If the address is empty until evening, send short stems and let them stand at a desk until somebody comes back.
