A folded centre gives the flower nothing to sag into, so a clustered bunch holds a clean outline through a week of damp air, while a shallow cup that has already shown its middle looks tired far earlier in the same room. #### Naming the job before naming the variety Say what the flowers have to do, then choose. Three jobs cover most of what comes through the workshop, and only two of them suit clustered heads: - a handover in front of people, where height and a single held gaze do the work; - a table people sit around for an evening; - a shelf or a bedside surface in a small apartment. The middle two are where this variety is the obvious answer. Small cups reward someone standing close to them, and a table is exactly that kind of distance. On a hall console a couple of metres from anyone walking past, the same stems give back very little, because the detail that justifies them cannot be seen from there.
