Roses in a glass dome in Phuket: the cover does the work

Preserved roses under a glass dome by a sea-facing window in Phuket

Of everything we build in preserved roses, the dome is what I reach for when nobody can describe the room. A glass cover seated into a weighted base encloses about two litres of air and then leaves it alone. On an island damp twelve months of the year, that small enclosed volume is most of the argument.

Phuket has a humid tropical climate all year, 25 to 33 °C, with a rainy season from May to October. The glycerine that keeps a preserved petal soft draws moisture from the air around it, which is the problem here. An open box hands the room's air to the flowers. A closed box slows that down. Glass ends the exchange, because water vapour does not travel through glass, and the only route in is the seam where cover meets base.

The rim drops into a shallow groove and stays where it is put. That seam is the only way in.

The window on the sea side

Half the addresses we serve on the west coast have a window facing the water. Anything on that sill takes light from mid-morning until the sun drops behind the sea. Glass is indifferent to it. It does not haze, it does not yellow at the edges, and it does not collect the fine scratches a dry cloth leaves on clear plastic over the years.

Five years on, it still reads clear.

The base is the part people underestimate. Ours are weighted wood or wood-look composite, felted underneath, with an LED ring set beneath the glass. After dark the light comes up through the petal edges.

"Before a dome goes out I ask one thing: is anyone going to move it? If nobody is, I stop worrying. If someone will carry it about, I sell them a box."

— JFLOO florist

The protection has a price: a dome is breakable. The weak point is the joint, where a rigid cover and a rigid base are held by fit alone, and steady vibration works away at that fit.

Why the roads change the handling

Phuket's roads decide how one of these travels. The climb to Patong, the drop into Kata, the gate lanes above Kamala. None of it is smooth. The last stretch to a hillside villa is usually concrete with a joint every few metres, and two rigid parts resting on each other feel every one.

So a dome leaves us bedded in foam in a carton, flat on the vehicle floor rather than a seat, and never stacked. Boxes travel differently.

The handover changes too. We do not leave a dome at a gate, a lobby counter or a security post. Someone takes it from the courier's hands, and if nobody is there in your window, we move the slot rather than set it down and hope. Before that it goes through the bench:

  • The rim seats all the way round. A cover that rocks in its groove gets swapped.
  • Nothing loose inside. Whatever is under the glass stays there for years.
  • The LED tested, the battery fresh. Switch reachable, light even around the ring.
  • The inside of the glass wiped last. A fingerprint under a dome cannot be reached later.

"A dome is a two-part object pretending to be one."

Most domes we send out go into a hotel room or a villa and stop there. Reception desks and offices in Phuket Town take them too. That is the life this format wants: a fixed surface, out of the traffic of the room, where nothing needs lifting to dust around it.

A dome is a present for an address. If the gift has to move on at the end of a stay, tell us at the order stage and we will point you at the acrylic box.

Ordering on the island

We deliver from 9 AM to 10 PM across Phuket Town, Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Bang Tao, Surin, Rawai, Chalong and Mai Khao. The usual west coast window is 90 to 180 minutes, with separate windows for villas, marinas and airport routes. In monsoon showers and evening hill traffic we add route time, and with a dome we start early and drive slowly rather than make up minutes on a serpentine.

Orders start from 2200 THB. Payment is by bank card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PromptPay, bank transfer or cash to the courier in THB. The island runs on UTC+7 with no daylight saving, worth checking before you pick an hour from abroad. If you want roses in a glass dome delivered to a resort room or a villa gate, send a manager the address and the name on the booking, and we will arrange the handover.
