On cream it turns translucent and grey within hours, so a rough journey shows up immediately. Look at the outer petals first. One or two coarse guard petals on each bud are normal protection and come off at home, and a bunch arriving without any of them has usually been stripped too early. Then look at the cut end, which should be pale and clean with no dark rim and nothing slimy on it.
