Gift baskets in Phuket: the format that arrives finished
A bouquet comes with a small task attached. Somebody has to unwrap it, cut the stems at an angle and find a vase, usually within the hour and usually at an awkward moment. A basket arrives finished, and on an island where most of our addresses are rented by the week, that difference decides the format on its own.
Nobody unpacks a suitcase looking for a vase.
A hotel room booked for an arriving guest is the clearest case. A villa taken for a fortnight is the next one, since the kitchen there holds two glasses and a kettle. An office reception works the same way, and so does a house somebody moved into last week with the crockery still in boxes. In all of them the recipient's hands are full or the kitchen is not yet working, and flowers standing on soaked foam hold for most of a week with nobody attending to them. The food side keeps earning its place after the flowers have finished, which is the quieter reason the format survives in rented rooms.
Ceremonies are the exception. A basket is carried in two hands and cannot be lifted for a photograph, so anything happening in front of a room of people goes out as a bouquet instead.
Gift baskets in Phuket travel further than they look. Delivery along the west coast takes 90 to 180 minutes, with separate windows for villas, marinas and airport routes. Orders start from 2200 THB, we work from 9 AM to 10 PM, and payment goes by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PromptPay, bank transfer or cash in baht.
Four lines in the order cover most of the rest:
- The floor, and whether there is a lift.
- An hour when somebody is at the address.
- Who takes it if the recipient is out.
- What has to last the week and what will be eaten the same evening. That single answer decides whether the perishable side gets a layer of its own, and it is the one thing we cannot work out from an address.
What the island adds
Phuket runs at 25 to 33 °C in a humid tropical climate, and an open weave gives its contents no protection at all once the basket is out of the van. Through the rainy season from May to October it travels closed and is opened at the address. On evening runs over the hills we add route time rather than promise the same window in any weather.
The flower part is cut to the height of the rim from what the island receives: Thai orchids, imported roses, chrysanthemums and hydrangeas, with tropical foliage along the edge to cover the foam on the side the recipient sees first. Seasonal peonies go into the middle when they are running.
Willow and rattan take the weight and keep the handle upright, and a flat base a palm wide is what stops a basket tipping every time it is set down.
The occasions behind these orders are resort ones. A birthday at a hotel, an anniversary, an arrival met at the airport, a dinner by the sea: in each of them the basket lands on a surface that is already there, and nobody has to leave the table to deal with it. Small weddings are the case where it does not work, since a basket is carried rather than presented.

Say which room it is going into and whether anyone will be there to take it. A basket left at a gate through a hot afternoon loses more than a wrapped bouquet would, because there is nothing around it to keep the heat off the heads.
