### Mixed-colour roses in Phuket: the sorting nobody sees A single-colour order is mostly a counting job. Stems come out of one box, they are stripped, cut and spiralled, and the florist thinks about height and density rather than about which head goes where. Colour changes that work completely. Boxes arrive by variety, so every mix starts life as several separate bundles laid out on the bench. The first pass has nothing to do with colour. Heads get graded by size, because a cream head the width of a plum sitting beside a red one twice that width reads as a mistake no matter how well the two shades sit together, and no amount of clever placement rescues it later. The second pass sorts by openness. Roses from different growers arrive at different stages, and a head already soft in the hand cannot go into the same arrangement as stems that are still tight, or the balance of the finished piece changes within days. Only after both passes does anyone start placing colour. #### What the bench pass actually decides Four things get settled before a single stem is bound, and all four matter more on a mixed order than on a plain one: - which heads are the same size, since size mismatch shows up faster than colour mismatch; - which are at the same stage of opening, so the arrangement ages as one object; - which stems are long enough to survive a fresh cut later in the week; - what gets set aside entirely, because a mix is where a marginal head is most tempting to use and most obvious afterwards. #### Then it has to get there Along the west coast, from Patong and Kata through Karon, Kamala, Surin and Bang Tao, we work in a 90 to 180 minute window.
