Rainbow roses in Phuket: reading a single stem

Close view of a rainbow rose petal showing dye following the veins, Phuket

Hold one flower away from the bunch and most of what matters becomes visible in a few seconds. Stripes begin at the base of the petal and run towards the edge, following the veins, because that is the direction water travels through the flower. Colour that stops in a straight line across a petal, or sits in a round patch, came from somewhere other than the stem.

That distinction is the whole quality question.

"Give the flower to whoever received it and let them look at one stem. The pattern explains itself, and the conversation stops being about whether it is real."

— JFLOO florist

Sectors should meet cleanly. A narrow blend where two colours touch is normal and rather attractive, while a muddy brown band where three colours have run together means the flower stood in solution longer than it should have. The centre finishes the story: inner petals are always paler, since dye reaches them last, and a completely white core under strong outer colour means the batch was pulled early.

The pattern also moves while you own the flower. As the head opens, the outer petals turn back and carry their stripes with them, so the design spreads outwards and the pale centre becomes more visible from above. A stem that looks sparse on the first evening often looks better on the second, which is the reverse of what people expect from a treated flower.

Brown spotting on the coloured areas is the one fault worth refusing outright. Everything else on this list is a matter of degree, and that one is not.

What that means for a bouquet on this island

Warmth speeds the whole thing up. At 25 to 33 °C an open head shows its pattern beautifully and then softens quickly, so for a delivery of any distance we choose stems that are still tight and let them open at the address instead of on the road.

The west coast window runs 90 to 180 minutes, from Patong and Kata through Karon and Kamala, with separate slots for villas, marinas and airport routes. Phuket Town, Rawai and Chalong sit on the same board. During the rains from May to October we carry the bunch boxed and unwrap the clear film at the door, since a soaked wrapper is worse for the effect than no wrapper at all.

Booking ahead helps more than it does with an ordinary bouquet. The colour has to travel up the stems before anything can be assembled, so a bunch ordered for tomorrow is easier to match than one ordered for this afternoon.

Delivery runs 9 AM to 10 PM, orders start from 2200 THB, and payment goes by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PromptPay, bank transfer or cash in baht.

Where these bunches actually go

Birthdays at resorts are the common case, and children's parties the reliable second. Both are events with a moment attached: somebody carries the flowers into a room, several people look at once, and the bunch has one chance to land.

Family dates are different. There the flowers stay in the house afterwards, and we usually build smaller and suggest a plain bouquet alongside if the vase matters as much as the arrival.

For a small wedding we tend to talk people out of this flower for the ceremony itself and into it for the party after, where a strong coloured object in a photograph does what it is meant to do.

Ask which method was used if the colour looks unusually even. A sprayed rose behaves differently from a stem dyed one and marks damp hands, and for rainbow roses in Phuket that difference is worth settling before the order rather than at the door.
