### Blue roses in Phuket: who actually orders them Ask a florist which colour generates the most questions before a purchase and the answer is this one. People rarely buy a blue rose casually. They arrive with a reason already formed, and the reason is usually about the recipient rather than about flowers. The colour is added rather than grown, either through tinted water taken up by the stem or by spraying the open head, and buyers know that perfectly well. #### The four requests we see again and again - Men receive them more comfortably than any pastel. A dozen blue roses on a desk reads as a considered object, and it spares the recipient the mild awkwardness that pink or peach can cause in an open office. - Teenagers and students are the second group, usually for graduations, exam results or the end of a school year, an age that likes an object with an obvious opinion and photographs it within a minute of arrival. - Then there is the recipient who already gets flowers regularly and has run out of surprises. A repeat of last year's red says nothing new, while a blue bunch is remembered because it is unusual, and being remembered is the entire point of that order. - The fourth case is thematic: corporate colours, a stage set, a party with a scheme, an opening where one strong object has to hold the frame in photographs. #### What that looks like on this island The thematic case is the one that fills our week. Resort events, private parties on villa terraces and shop openings all want a single object that photographs the same in every shot, and blue is easy to match to a colour scheme in a way that natural shades are not. Graduation orders cluster around the end of the school year and arrive from parents abroad more often than from anyone here. Those usually come with a picture attached and a request to make it look exactly like the picture, which is a conversation worth having before the order rather than after. Birthdays in resorts take blue roses too, though generally as part of a bunch rather than the whole of it, with white carrying the volume and the blue doing the announcing. #### Getting them there Blue is worth booking ahead. Colour has to travel up the stems or be applied to open heads and dried, and neither step compresses into a same day slot, so an order placed the day before is a different order from one placed at lunchtime. Along the west coast, from Patong and Kata through Karon, Kamala, Surin and Bang Tao, deliveries run in a 90 to 180 minute window, and villas, marinas and airport routes have their own slots. Phuket Town, Rawai, Chalong and Mai Khao sit on the same board. Sun is the enemy of a treated petal. At 25 to 33 °C a boxed bunch is fine on the road, but a vase left on a bright terrace loses tone faster than a natural pigment would, and we say so at the handover rather than leaving it to be discovered. Rain from May to October adds time on the hill roads in the evening, and we build that into the route.
