### Turquoise roses in Phuket: the greenery is the hard part Ordinary leaf green is built on yellow. Yellow is the one thing a blue green petal cannot afford beside it. That is the whole difficulty with this colour on an island where the foliage in front of us is tropical and warm. Tropical foliage is broad, glossy and yellow leaning. Put it behind turquoise and the arrangement becomes an argument between two greens, with the rose on the losing side. > "We build turquoise with almost no leaf at all. Whatever green goes in has to be paler and colder than the rose, and on this island that is a short list." > JFLOO florist So the green gets cut back rather than substituted. A turquoise bunch here carries a fraction of the foliage a red one would. The space that opens up is filled with flower, which costs more and works better. A band of white between turquoise and anything warm keeps both colours readable from across a room. That matters once the bouquet lands on a long table where people are looking at it from one end. White flowers do that job most reliably. White chrysanthemum and white hydrangea both give the eye somewhere to rest. Hydrangea brings volume, chrysanthemum a harder flatter surface that holds its shape in humid air. Seasonal peonies are the other option worth naming, at the pale end of their range. They read as mass rather than line, they carry no yellow into the bunch, and their only real limit is the calendar. Outside those weeks white does the work and does it without argument. Thai orchids are the local temptation. They come in shades that sit near turquoise and they are the one material always within reach here. The catch is texture: an orchid spray reads as a line, a rose head reads as a mass, and the two pull against each other in the same bunch. We use them when a client asks and keep the count low. Foliage does two jobs in a bunch and only one of them is colour. It also holds the heads apart so the bunch does not flatten in the hand, so what replaces it here is stem length and a firmer tie, which makes a turquoise bunch slower to build than a red one of the same size. #### What the climate does to a dyed stem Humidity is the second reason the foliage stays down. Broad tropical leaf traps moist air against the heads, and a damp petal on a dyed rose gives up colour to everything it touches. Delivery runs 90 to 180 minutes along the west coast, with separate windows for villas, marinas and airport routes, and none of that is time a wet bunch should spend wrapped tight. During monsoon showers from May to October and in evening hill traffic we add route time. Orders start from 2200 THB. Vase water often goes faintly blue on the first day, since the stem releases what is left of the dye solution. It is harmless and it stops on its own.
