### Coral roses in Phuket: how they behave once they are standing Coral cultivars tend to have thick, firm petals. That is the reason the shade is available all year rather than in a season, and it is also the reason these roses survive a long drive better than most of what leaves our bench. A head built like that resists bruising in a box. Given a fresh angled cut and clean water, it holds its form for the usual week to two, which on an island where guests move between addresses is worth more than it sounds. That durability settles more orders here than the colour does. A guest moving from a hotel to a villa halfway through a trip can take a coral bunch along and it still looks like an arrangement at the other end, which is not something we would promise of a soft petalled rose. The tone does not stay put, though. Red would say too much and white would say too little. Three requests account for the bulk of it: - a colleague, a neighbour or a teacher, where the gesture has to be friendly and nothing more; - a large single colour arrangement for a room, since a warm even shade fills a space without dominating it; - a birthday or a thank you, when the sender does not know the recipient well enough to risk a stronger colour. Temperatures here usually sit between 25 and 33 °C, and coral takes that better than a pale rose does, which is why we suggest it for the longer runs when somebody is choosing a colour on the phone. From May to October the rain comes in bursts, and evening traffic on the hill roads gets extra time built into the route rather than an optimistic promise at the point of order. Airport arrivals sit in their own window, and coral suits them for the same structural reason. The bunch is handed over in the open, carried through a terminal and then driven for another hour, and firm petals are what make that sequence survivable. Where the vase ends up matters more than any of that. A room that gets sun through the afternoon will take a coral bouquet to apricot within days, while the same flowers in a shaded room hold their opening colour most of the week. Villas make this worse than hotels do, since the vase usually goes wherever the view is. If the recipient chose the colour carefully, ask for the cooler pink leaning cultivars and put the vase away from the glass. Delivery hours are 9 AM to 10 PM.
