Rainbow bouquets in Phuket: what to ask before you pay

One question does more work than any other in this category, and almost nobody asks it. Which method was used, dye drawn up the stem or aerosol sprayed on the outside. The two look alike in a photograph, they behave differently in a room, and only one of them comes off on damp hands.

Care itself is ordinary once you know the answer. Clean water changed regularly, a fresh cut above the split, and a spot away from a fruit bowl. Vase water tints slightly on the first day as residual dye leaves the stem, which is normal and changes nothing about the petal. Colour does not travel between stems, so a white rose standing in the same jug stays white.

What does shorten the week is the split itself. A divided stem is weaker than a whole one and drinks less well, and the dyeing has already used part of the flower's life before it reaches the vase.

Heat, rain and the road

Air here sits at 25 to 33 °C most of the year, which is warm enough to move the whole cycle along faster than the catalogue photograph suggests. A bouquet of this kind rewards being put in water immediately rather than admired for an hour first.

Rain is the bigger problem.

The monsoon runs May to October, and water on a treated petal leaves marks that a plain white rose would never show. On sprayed heads it does worse and pulls colour onto the wrapping.
