Turquoise bouquets in Phuket: which light the flowers will live in
Turquoise sits at the cold end of the spectrum, further from daylight than almost anything else sold as a cut flower. Rooms are warm. Table lamps and low afternoon sun push yellow into everything they touch, and yellow is exactly what turns turquoise into a flat grey green.
Which room the bouquet lands in matters more than which flower goes into it.
Light first, flower second
Under daylight or a cool white bulb the colour holds and looks close to the photograph that sold it. Under a warm domestic lamp it drops perhaps a third of its intensity and shifts towards sage. In a candlelit restaurant by the sea it barely registers as blue at all. Nothing has happened to the flowers themselves; the light reaching them simply carries less blue than daylight does. An open terrace at midday is the other extreme, and there the problem is fading rather than shifting, because dye gives way in strong sun sooner than natural pigment.
Cameras go the other way. Phone processing lifts saturation on cool tones more than on warm ones, so the bouquet photographs brighter and more electric than it looks in the hand, which is worth knowing if the picture is going somewhere public.
Getting it to the address
The west coast runs on a 90 to 180 minute window, and Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Surin and Bang Tao all sit inside it. During monsoon showers and evening hill traffic we add route time, since a box that arrives a little late still arrives intact.
Four things save a phone call later:
- The room the bouquet will stand in. Say it at the order stage, because it changes which shade we dye to.
- Villas, marinas and airport runs sit on their own delivery windows rather than on the coast road timing.
- Hotels take the box closed. Rosewood Phuket, The Slate Phuket and Veranda Resort Phuket all receive it that way, and it gets opened indoors.
- Phuket Town, Rawai, Chalong and Mai Khao are on the same board as the west coast, with extra time built into the May to October rains and into the hill roads after dark.

Size the arrangement for the room rather than for the hand. A small posy in a bright space with a lot of glass reads as a pale smudge from the doorway, and turquoise loses more than other colours in that situation, since it has no warmth to fall back on. Fewer and taller stems hold their own better than a dense low bunch of the same value.
Thai orchids, imported roses, chrysanthemums and hydrangeas are what the workshop draws on, and only white material takes dye cleanly. White chrysanthemum drinks it faster than white rose does, and the veining shows more afterwards, which is why two flowers dyed in the same bucket rarely land on the same depth of colour.

Turquoise bouquets in Phuket work for a themed evening, a brand colour or a photo set, and they misfire as a sincere gift, because the shade is visibly man made and reads as staging. Order a few days ahead when the tone has to match something, since batches are dyed on request and a same day match is not something to count on.
