### Carnation bouquets in Phuket: flowers for the week after the party Plenty of bouquets are built for a single evening. This one is built for what happens afterwards, and on an island where guests stay a week or two, that difference decides a lot of orders. A carnation still looks like a bouquet long after the person has stopped thinking about it. Anywhere the flowers have to survive without attention suits them: a rented villa, a desk in a serviced office, a hotel room the guest only sees after dark. They travel better than most as well. The heads are tough, the stems do not snap, and 90 to 180 minutes in a courier's hands along the west coast shows on them far less than it would on a rose. Two weeks in clean water is ordinary for a carnation and three is not unusual. That number is structural: a narrow woody stem, a high petal count, and slow water loss through the bloom. Everything else in this description rests on it. A room that roses find too hot will not shorten a carnation much. Three places on the island where that matters: - Villas rented by the week, where nobody is going to change the water daily. - Airport arrivals, when the flowers wait in a room before the guest reaches it. - Small weddings, where the table is dressed in the morning and looked at all evening. Weddings are worth a separate line. A small ceremony by the sea gets dressed hours before anyone arrives, and the flowers stand through the afternoon before the first guest looks at them. Carnations do that without wilting into the photographs, and they cost less per unit of width than the imported roses they usually sit beside. Rain adds the other variable. Between May and October, and on the hill roads after dark, we add route time, and a flower that shrugs off an extra hour in the van is the safer choice for those runs. We work 9 AM to 10 PM, and villas, marinas and airport routes have their own windows, separate from the 90 to 180 minute west coast clock. #### What a modern bunch looks like Nothing about the plant requires the short red singles standing bolt upright that gave carnations their reputation. Spray varieties put several heads of different sizes on one stem and give a loose, uneven outline. The colour range now runs through dusty pinks, apricot, cream, lime and two-tone edges. Stem length matters as much as colour. Short stems in a tight upright bundle look institutional; long stems in a relaxed hand-tie do not. Tropical foliage behind them widens the outline further, and at that point the old association never arrives at all. There is a fair case against them, and it is worth saying out loud. Nothing about a carnation lands across a room on sight, and for an occasion where the recipient expects to see money on the table this is not the bunch that manages it. Send them where the flowers have to last rather than where they have to arrive. Tell us how long the recipient is staying and where the vase will stand.
