### Gerbera bouquets in Phuket: a gift with no subtext Some flowers arrive carrying an argument. Red roses commit the sender to a position, and somebody who wanted to send nothing more than goodwill ends up explaining themselves afterwards. Gerberas make no such claim on the recipient. That is most of the reason people reach for them. The flower is a flat disc of colour on a bare stem, with no perfume at all. It reads as cheerful without reading as romantic, which is a narrow gap and a useful one. A colleague finishing a difficult project, a villa host who kept an eye on the place for a fortnight, a teacher at the end of term: any of them can be thanked in gerberas without anyone in the room working out what was meant. #### Colour is the whole argument Because the head is a flat disc with no shadowed depth, the colour arrives at full strength from across a room. Roses at that distance read as dark shapes. Gerberas hold their tone: cream, butter yellow, apricot, coral, crimson, a deep red that stops just short of brown. Two-tone varieties with a dark central disc read differently again, sharper and more graphic. There is no true blue in the species, so anything sky-coloured has been dyed, and dyed heads give themselves away along the petal edge. Mixing four or five strong colours in one bunch is the common request and the easy mistake. A tighter palette, two neighbouring tones plus white, looks deliberate at exactly the same size and price. Green does less for gerberas than it does for roses. The stems are naked by nature, so a florist packing the gaps with tropical foliage is usually hiding uneven head heights. Ask for the heads to be set at slightly different levels instead, which gives the bunch depth without a single leaf. #### Delivery, and what the island does to the flower The west coast runs on a 90 to 180 minute window, from Patong and Kata through Karon, Kamala and Bang Tao to Surin, with separate slots for villas, marinas and airport runs. Humid air at 25 to 33 °C is less of a problem for this flower than people expect. The head is the fragile part in transit, so it travels fixed in the box, and between May and October we add route time for the rains and for the hill roads after dark. Four things worth deciding before the order goes in: - The palette. Two neighbouring tones plus white, or one strong colour used on its own. - Whether the shade has to be exact. Availability of a particular colour shifts a little through the year. - Where the vase will stand. No scent means the dining table is available, which is not true of much else on the list. - The occasion.
