### Hydrangea bouquets in Phuket: humid air helps, the road does not The air here is humid tropical, usually 25 to 33 °C, and hydrangea minds that far less than most of what stands beside it on the bench. The head loses water through its whole surface, so dry air is what empties it fastest, and this island rarely supplies any. What the island supplies instead is distance. The cost shows up in road time. #### The run, and what goes in the box Delivery along the west coast takes 90 to 180 minutes and covers Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Bang Tao and Surin, with separate windows for villas, marinas and airport routes. From May to October we add route time for monsoon showers and evening hill traffic. Hydrangea is the one flower on the list where that added time changes the packing rather than just the promise. Stop topping up the vase, let the water go down on its own, and the head loses moisture slowly enough to hold its shape. Colour moves as it dries, blue towards grey-green, pink towards a dusty biscuit tone. Humid air stretches the process out, so a head left in an air conditioned room finishes sooner than one on an open terrace. Direct sun undoes the whole result, bleaching the head and leaving it brittle. A dried head is fragile in one direction only. Pressure from above crushes it, while the same head sits in a dry vase for months if nothing touches it. #### Who they suit Hydrangea goes to people who prefer mass to detail, and to rooms with enough wall for a wide silhouette. A resort birthday, an anniversary, a dinner by the sea all work, because the bouquet goes into water within minutes and then stays in one room. An airport arrival is the case we argue against, since a bouquet that spends the afternoon in a car is a bouquet that arrives already spent. Very little needs to go in beside it. One or two Thai orchid stems or a handful of tropical foliage break the sphere and stop the bouquet reading as one flat shape. A second large round flower turns the whole thing into an argument, and the hydrangea wins that one on size before anybody has looked properly. Hotel rooms are the most common address for it here.
