### Iris bouquets in Phuket: a flower that brings its own architecture An iris arrives with the arrangement already settled. The leaves are long straight blades that hold a vertical line without any added greenery, and the head sits at the top of a clean stem with nothing in between. A bunch of iris needs no filler. Putting tropical foliage behind it usually makes it worse, because the sword shapes stop being visible against a mass of soft leaves. On this island that is an unusual instruction, since almost everything else we build gets foliage behind it as a matter of course. Scent is the other argument. Iris is close to scentless, and in a closed room at 25 to 33 °C that counts for more than it would in a cool climate, where a heavily scented bouquet has somewhere to disperse. > "The first thing we tell people about iris is to stop asking us to add anything to it. Imported roses want deeper water and warmer handling, so in a shared vase one of the two is always the loser, and the same applies to anything built to stand with half its stem submerged. #### The sequence in the vase Within a day of standing in water the bud unwinds. Three outer segments fold down and out, three inner ones stand upright, and the flower ends up roughly twice the size of the thing that came out of the box. A day or two later that same flower softens and twists into a damp rag, and the next bud on the stem takes its place. The maintenance is small and it is not optional. Pinch each spent flower off at its base with your fingers, and the stem carries on with its remaining buds looking clean. Water goes in shallow and cool. The lower stem is fleshy and turns slimy when half of it stands submerged, which fouls the water and blocks the cut, so two fingers topped up daily beats a deep vase filled once. Warmth runs the whole cycle faster. A bouquet with a week in it can finish in three or four days here, and a vase standing in moving air by an open door goes quicker still. #### What the island adds West coast runs take 90 to 180 minutes and cover Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Bang Tao and Surin, with separate windows for villas, marinas and airport routes. We work 9 AM to 10 PM. Between May and October, and on the hill roads after dark, we add route time, and a closed iris bud is one of the few things in the van that does not mind waiting. What it does mind is pressure. The tissue is thin, a brown crease across a bud does not recover, and the mark is still there once the flower opens, so boxes carrying iris travel flat and packed alone.
