### Calla lily bouquets in Phuket: what the gift says before it is opened A calla has no ruffles, almost no scent and no visible complexity. It says something restrained, which is a narrower message than most flowers carry and a more useful one when you know the recipient. Nobody has ever called a calla bouquet cheerful. That is not a fault. It suits a formal handover, an opening, an apology to someone who would find a large red armful embarrassing, and it has been a wedding flower for a century. What it does badly is exuberance, so a loud celebration is the wrong place to send one. White callas carry a double reading worth knowing about. Across much of Europe the same stem turns up at weddings and at funerals, and while context settles it in practice, nobody hands a tied bouquet across a lunch table and reads it as sympathy. The association is still real enough that some florists avoid a plain white calla sheaf for a birthday. A burgundy, apricot or yellow cultivar removes the question entirely, and on this island the coloured ones photograph better against dark wood and sea light anyway. There is a second thing the bouquet says. Choosing it assumes the recipient prefers restraint, which flatters when it is true and lands cold when it is not. #### Where these orders go Most of what we build here lands in one of four situations: - A resort birthday, where the bouquet has to look right on a table already crowded with glasses and plates, so we keep it to a handful of stems in a straight cylinder. - An anniversary at a villa, usually the longest build of the four. - An airport arrival, cut shorter and wrapped harder, because the flowers still have a car journey ahead of them. - A small wedding, which is where callas have always belonged. Delivery along the west coast takes 90 to 180 minutes, with separate windows for villas, marinas and airport routes, and we work from 9 AM to 10 PM. Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Bang Tao and Surin sit inside that band comfortably; Rawai, Chalong, Mai Khao and Phuket Town are usually planned for the earlier half of the day. Boxes with callas travel upright. The stem is fleshy and hollow, it accepts a curve and refuses a fold, and one crease on a hill road is enough to lose the stem entirely. Hotels along the coast make this easy. Weather is rarely the problem for this flower. The island runs at 25 to 33 °C most of the year, the funnel is dense and gives up very little water, and it copes with that better than softer material does. During the rains from May to October and on the evening climbs we add route time, which matters to the schedule rather than to the flowers. Change the water every day or two, take a fresh slice off each stem while you are there, and keep the vase where nobody has to squeeze past it.
