### Dianthus bouquets in Phuket: the run is the easy part Getting flowers across this island is what most people ask about first. West coast runs take 90 to 180 minutes and cover Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Bang Tao and Surin, with separate windows for villas, marinas and airport routes. Between May and October, and on the hill roads after dark, we add route time to the promise. Dianthus is close to indifferent to all of that, because the heads are small and firm and the stems will not kink inside a box. What decides the bouquet is the batch behind it. #### Where a rushed build shows Look at the buds first. Every cluster carries tight little heads behind the open ones, and in good material most of those will open over the following week. In cheap or early-cut stems they are hard green beads that will still be hard green beads a fortnight later, and they read as gaps once the front heads age. Two or three stems out of a bunch tell you what the rest of the batch is. The calyx is the second thing to check, the green cup sitting under the petals. A cup split down one seam lets the petals spill sideways, and the head never regains its shape after that. Then the cuts. A stem trimmed through one of the swollen joints drinks poorly, so the ends belong in the clear section between them. Foliage under water is the failure that happens at the far end rather than in the workshop. Dianthus leaves are narrow and easy to overlook, one of them ends up below the waterline, and by the third day the water in a villa kitchen has gone cloudy. It widens the outline and gives the small clusters something to sit against, which they need more than an expensive companion flower. Colour is where dianthus is most often misused.
