### Gypsophila bouquets in Phuket: the bunch that outlives the week Cut flowers have a scheduled ending. You watch a rose bouquet decline over a week or two, then throw it out, and both sides understand the arrangement from the start. Gypsophila can skip that ending entirely, because it dries without collapsing and simply carries on standing there. That is the practical case for buying it by the armful. The stems are thin and woody and the flowers are tiny, so there is very little moisture to lose and almost no weight for a dried head to drop. Stop topping up the water and let the bunch dry where it stands, out of direct sun. Over a fortnight or so the white settles into a warm cream, the shape stays more or less as it was, and the bunch turns from fresh flowers into something closer to a dry arrangement. Hanging it upside down in a dark, airy cupboard is the tidier version of the same process, and it keeps the stems straight instead of letting them relax outwards. In humid air the airflow matters more than the darkness, so a shaded room with something moving the air beats a sealed cupboard on this island. Neither method needs sprays, glycerine or a hairdryer. Dyed stems behave differently. Colour taken up through the water fades unevenly as the bunch dries, while sprayed colour keeps its tone even as the stems underneath start to look obviously painted. Dried gypsophila standing in a vase without water in a Phuket villa #### What ruins a dried bunch Sunlight, exactly as it does with preserved roses. Ultraviolet pulls the pigment apart, so a windowsill turns cream to a dull grey within a season, and on a coast where rooms open onto terraces, finding a shelf against an interior wall is the harder half of that advice. Dust is the other enemy. The only safe treatment is a cool hairdryer on its lowest setting held well back, since a cloth simply breaks the flowers off the stems. Four things worth knowing before you order: - The bunch will be wider than the photograph. Depth flattens in a picture and gypsophila is mostly depth. - It sheds from day one. Tiny dry flowers drop from the base of the stems for as long as it is in the house. - White is the natural colour. Everything else has been dyed, one way or the other. - The dried version is the default ending, not a failure. A missed week of water changes gets you there. #### Getting it to the address The west coast window is 90 to 180 minutes, from Patong and Kata through Karon, Kamala and Bang Tao to Surin, with separate slots for villas, marinas and airport runs. We work 9 AM to 10 PM, orders start from 2200 THB, and payment goes by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PromptPay, bank transfer or cash in baht. The bunch travels well on its own account. What it cannot survive is weight on top, so the box goes out with height to spare and nothing stacked on it. During the May to October rains it is wrapped tighter as well, because a soaked armful takes a long time to dry and does not come back to the same shape. Villas take the box at the gate more often than at a door, and this is one of the few deliveries we are content to leave standing in shade for a few minutes while somebody is found. They just stopped changing the water." > JFLOO florist Tell us whether you want it fresh or already dried. They are different orders: a fresh armful is cut to a date, while a dried one comes cream instead of white and can go out on any day you name.
