### Lilac bouquets in Phuket: the vase decides more than the branches do With most cut flowers, where the vase ends up is a matter of taste. With a branch of lilac it changes both how the gift smells and how long it survives, and the two pull in opposite directions often enough to be worth thinking about before the flowers arrive. Air movement helps and warmth does not. A hallway, a landing, a covered veranda with the sea side open, a kitchen with the door propped: all of those keep the scent clean and moving rather than syrupy and stuck. A closed warm room does the reverse, concentrating the smell until it becomes tiring and drying the flowers out faster while it happens. That gives an easy rule for villas. The vessel is the other half, and light glass is the common mistake. These branches are stiff, they splay outwards as soon as they are released from the wrapping, and the weight of each one sits right at the top where the panicle is. A tall heavy jug is not decoration in this case but ballast, because a slim glass vase goes over the first time somebody walks past it quickly. Stoneware, thick pottery and anything with a wide weighted base all do the job better than something that looks elegant empty. Space is underestimated too. A panicle takes up a great deal of room and barely compresses, so five branches occupy roughly the volume you would expect from twenty ordinary stems. Height is the last thing to settle before the vessel is chosen. Lilac is sold by the branch and branches are not cut to a uniform length, so a bunch that looked compact in a photograph can stand a good deal taller in the room.
