### Vegetable bouquets in Phuket: who reads them correctly Hand someone a bunch of peppers, radishes and herbs wrapped the way roses would be and the first reaction is almost never gratitude. It is laughter, then a phone, then questions about how the thing was assembled. Eating it occurs to people some way down the list, and that order of reactions is the whole format. It lands with people who cook. It also lands with the colleague who has spent a year explaining his diet to the office, at a housewarming where a hamper would be too formal, and with men, which matters more than it should, since the standard alternatives for a male recipient are thin and everybody in the room knows it. For any of those recipients the contents stay useful long after the joke has landed. It does not work as a romantic gesture. Well made or badly made, it reads as a joke, and a joke is the wrong register for an anniversary dinner by the sea. The local variable is simpler than it looks: whether the address has a kitchen. A villa in Bang Tao or a long stay apartment in Phuket Town gives the gift its second life within the day. A hotel room does not, and there the arrangement stops being food and becomes an object standing on a desk until somebody gives up on it. What we ask before building one: - Whether the recipient cooks. - Villa, apartment, hotel or a table at a restaurant. - The hour of the handover, since these are given on the day they are made. - Who else will be there. This gift works on an audience, and a bouquet opened alone in a room does far less than the same one opened at a table with people around it. The west coast runs on a 90 to 180 minute window, with villas, marinas and airport routes quoted separately, and from May to October the monsoon adds time on the hill roads after dark. None of that is comfortable for this format. Sideways pressure bruises, cut faces darken in open air, and air between 25 and 33 °C speeds both up, so the box travels standing with a high side and goes out on the day it is built rather than waiting overnight. The build itself is what makes the difference over that distance. Vegetables are heavy, a skewer through soft flesh is a weak joint, and a tomato will rotate on its skewer while a cucumber splits along the puncture. Dense items sit low and near the centre, light ones go to the edge, and a stiff card or foam core inside carries the load. The honest test is whether the finished arrangement stands on a table without being propped, because anything that fails it arrives in a different shape than it left in. Both hands, from underneath, is how it gets carried. The paper collar is decorative and tears along the edge under this much weight, which is not a thing anybody wants to discover halfway across a restaurant.
