### Spring bouquets in Phuket: the gift that arrives without a date Most flowers come with an occasion attached to them. A birthday, a leaving party, an apology of some size. This group sits outside all of that, because it is usually handed over on an ordinary evening with nothing written on the card, and the whole build follows from there. Scale is the first thing anybody reads. A large formal arrangement announces an occasion before the recipient has looked at a single stem, and with no occasion behind it the size becomes a question in itself. A modest armful asks for nothing back, which is exactly why it is easy to accept. Colour carries the same signal. The pale end of the palette, cream and soft pink and white with green still showing in it, puts no obligation on anyone, while deep red would change the message completely with the same flowers underneath. The wrapping finishes the job. Loose paper, a plain tie, stems left visible at the base, nothing in the presentation that suggests a rehearsed moment. None of that is an accident of style. #### Where these go on the island Resort rooms take the largest share of them. A bouquet already waiting on the desk reads better than one handed over downstairs, and rooms at Rosewood Phuket, The Slate Phuket, Trisara, Banyan Tree Phuket and Veranda Resort Phuket all have somewhere sensible to stand it. Dinners by the sea are the other regular. The size question flips at a table, since the bouquet has to sit below eye level and then go home in one hand at the end of the evening. Airport arrivals work only if the thing is small. Anything needing two arms through a terminal has stopped being a light gesture by the first escalator. Four questions before one goes out: - Whether the recipient has a vase, since soft stems want a narrow neck rather than a wide bowl. - Which kind of address it is: villa, resort room, restaurant table or family home. - Handover in person, or left at the address. - How open the flowers should be on arrival, which matters more here than in a cool climate, because 25 to 33 °C moves a closed bud along quickly and a bouquet sent tight in the morning is a different bouquet by dinner. #### Getting it there The west coast run takes 90 to 180 minutes and covers Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Bang Tao, Surin, Phuket Town, Rawai, Chalong and Mai Khao. Villas, marinas and airport routes are quoted in their own windows. Delivery runs 9 AM to 10 PM, orders start from 2200 THB, and payment goes by bank card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PromptPay, bank transfer or cash to the courier in baht. From May to October the rain sets the pace, and on the hill roads after dark we build spare time into the route. Soft stems in loose paper are the wrong load to hurry, and a shower lasting a few minutes takes the certainty out of a delivery slot. Water dries on a pale petal and leaves a mark, so heads travel covered through those months and the paper comes off indoors. #### What it costs the sender in attention Very little, which is part of the appeal. Cold water filled low in the vase and changed daily, a place away from the window and out of the draught from an air conditioner, a proper recut on the first evening. > "People send this one when they have no reason to send anything at all. It is the hardest brief we get, because the bouquet has to look like nobody planned it." > JFLOO florist Seasonal peonies, hydrangeas and imported roses all reward that small amount of care, and chrysanthemums outlast the rest of the bouquet by a clear margin once the soft material has finished. What none of it survives is being left wrapped on a counter until morning, which on this island costs more than the whole journey from the workshop.
