### Summer bouquets in Phuket: how open should they be when they land A tight bud and a fully open head can come off the same delivery on the same morning. What separates them is the stage the stem was cut at and how warm it has been since. In this climate that gap decides whether a bouquet peaks on the evening it is handed over or three days later in a room nobody is using. Almost nobody asks about it at the counter. An imported rose cut hard, with the outer petals still wrapped tight, will sit closed for a day or two in a cooled room. At 25 to 33 °C it opens within hours, which is why the warm season cut is deliberately tighter than it would be anywhere with a cold winter. The same variety behaves like two different flowers depending on where it ends up standing. Seasonal peonies show it most clearly. A bud taken too early can stall and dry closed without ever opening, while one already showing colour and giving slightly under the thumb will be fully out by the next morning. Heat brings both of those outcomes forward rather than changing them. Hydrangeas work by a different rule. Their heads are open when they are cut and there is no stage left to wait for, so the thing to judge is firmness: a head that feels papery at the edge is already going over, whatever it costs. #### The address decides the answer For a bouquet handed over at an event, ask for stems already open. Guests see the arrangement for one evening, and a closed bud reads as unfinished however well it would have performed by Thursday. For a bouquet somebody will live with, ask for the opposite. Tight stems in this heat give the recipient the whole show: the flowers unfold in the vase over several days and the bouquet changes shape while they watch it. Four things settle which of those we build: - An event tonight, or a room somebody is staying in for a week. - Air conditioning or an open terrace, because the same cut behaves differently in each. - The hour of handover. - Whether the bouquet travels onward afterwards, since an airport arrival means it gets carried through a terminal and then sits in a warm car, and that is a journey we cut for rather than a detail. #### Getting it across the island The west coast run takes 90 to 180 minutes across Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Bang Tao and Surin, with Phuket Town, Rawai, Chalong and Mai Khao on the same board. Villas, marinas and airport routes have their own windows. From May to October the rain runs, and on the hill roads in the evening we add time to the route. Chrysanthemums and Thai orchids will still be standing when the softer heads have finished, which means the bouquet gets smaller rather than finished, and that is worth asking for at the time of ordering.
