Some flowers make a statement and then have to be lived up to. Red roses commit the sender to something, and so does anything built at a scale that announces itself across a room. That is fine when the occasion is once a year and unhelpful the rest of the time.
A basket of alstroemeria makes a smaller statement on purpose. It reads as considered rather than declarative, which is why it turns up in the situations that repeat rather than the ones that get photographed. The sender is not asking for a reaction. They are marking something, and then both people carry on as before.
It carries no romantic reading at all.
That single fact does more work than any other property of the flower. A thank you to somebody who helped with something dull, a family date that comes round every year, a host who put you up for a week, a neighbour who did you a favour while you were away: in all of them, a gift that suggests more than was meant is worse than no gift. Alstroemeria never suggests more than was meant. It is also the arrangement people send twice to the same recipient without it becoming a habit that needs explaining.
Why the format suits those occasions
An arrangement on soaked foam arrives complete. Nobody has to interrupt what they are doing to find a container, and nothing sits in a wrapper waiting for somebody to take pity on it. It stands on the surface it was put on and asks only for water poured at the rim.
The flower adds its own argument to that. Alstroemeria has almost no scent, so a room full of people is not obliged to have an opinion about it.
Then there is the duration, which is the part senders underestimate. Each umbel opens its buds in sequence rather than all at once, so a basket keeps going for a fortnight or so in clean water while the individual flowers in it are replaced by the next ones along. The arrangement stays roughly the same size throughout. Nothing else we build holds a shape for that long without attention.

Villa addresses in Bang Tao, Surin and Rawai take most of these, since the arrangement can stand on a side table for the length of a stay and nobody has to think about it again. - How many days it has to look right for.
- Whether it stands somewhere people sit close to it or somewhere they walk past.
- Whether anything larger is needed in the middle, since this flower gives no big single bloom.
- Who tops up the water, or whether nobody will.
