Almost every other arrangement in this section ends when the flowers do. This one does not. A chrysanthemum will normally still be worth looking at after the foam underneath it has given up, and knowing that changes what the week actually asks of you.

How the block behaves
Foam dries from the top down. The surface can be dry and crumbling while the centre is still properly wet, so looking at it tells you very little.
The check is a fingertip at the rim rather than an eye from above. Damp foam springs back and leaves the finger wet, dry foam crumbles under pressure. Water then goes in slowly at the edge until the block stops taking it, and pouring fast is wasted, because a quick stream runs off the compacted top and down between the block and the wall of the bowl.
Nothing else is asked of the person who received it.
The smell that ends these early
Leaves buried in the block sour long before any flower fades, and it is that, not wilting, that finishes more of these arrangements than anything else. The smell arrives before there is anything to see, which is why people so often look for the source somewhere else in the room.
At 25 to 33 °C with humid air it happens faster here than it would in a cool climate. So we strip the lower stem harder before seating and leave foliage only above the level of the rim, where it dries instead of sitting wet.
Three habits keep one of these going for its full run:
- top up at the rim before the surface has gone dry rather than after
- keep the bowl out of direct sun through glass, which heats the block through the liner
- if a smell appears mid week, look under the rim rather than at the heads.
What these get ordered for here
Long stays and long drives, mostly. A basket that has to stand on a hotel counter or in a villa for a full week is the natural case, and so is an office or a shop in Phuket Town where nobody has time to look after it.
Anniversaries and family dates come through this category more than birthdays do. The reason is timing rather than sentiment: a birthday gift is looked at on the day, while an anniversary arrangement often has to still be standing when the guests who could not come that evening arrive later in the week.
Marina addresses are the other steady source. A basket left in a saloon holds its seating on the water in a way nothing arranged in a vase manages, and there is no vase to secure and nothing to spill on a hull.
Thai orchids go into the same bowls where an arrangement needs to hold form through a humid week, and hydrangeas fill a wide shape faster than adding chrysanthemum heads would. Imported roses come in when the build needs something rewarding at close range.
From May to October the rain and the evening hill traffic lengthen the routes, and we put that time into the delivery window rather than into a promise we would have to break.
