Baskets with hyacinths in Phuket: the planted version and who it is for

Planted hyacinth basket with bulbs set in moss on a villa table in Phuket

In a planted basket the bulb is intact, roots and all, so nothing has been separated from its food supply. That single structural difference changes how the arrangement is watered, how long it stays presentable, and what happens to it once the flowering finishes.

Watering is the first thing to relearn. A planted basket is treated like a plant rather than like an arrangement: a small amount of water goes into the compost, not over the flowers, and the liner underneath holds whatever the compost does not take.

"People water a planted basket the way they water a cut one, from the top and generously. It is the one instruction worth repeating at handover."

— JFLOO florist

It also stays presentable considerably longer than cut spikes standing in a block, because the flower is still being fed while it opens.

The ending, and who it suits

Then there is the ending, which is the part that decides who this version suits. When the flowering finishes, the leaves are left to die back on their own rather than cut off, and the bulb keeps. That afterlife is the reason planted baskets go to people who garden, to grandparents, and to anyone who dislikes throwing flowers away.

It is also the reason they are a poor choice for a guest in a resort room. Somebody who leaves on Sunday has no use for a bulb, and for that recipient the cut version is the honest recommendation, since it is built to be complete on the day it arrives and to be left behind without regret.

Villa addresses in Bang Tao, Surin and Rawai are where the planted version makes sense, along with any long stay address in Phuket Town, Chalong or Kamala. Resort birthdays in Patong, Kata and Karon take the cut build almost every time.

There is a quick way to tell which version arrived. In a cut arrangement the stalk goes straight down into the block. In a planted one the base of the bulb is visible under the moss, and the surface around it is damp from underneath rather than from anything poured over the top.

Weight is the other difference, and it shows up at the handover. Compost and bulbs are heavier than a soaked block of the same size, so a planted basket of any real size is a two hand object, and it goes onto its final surface when the courier puts it down rather than being carried around the house afterwards.

Heat, humidity and routes

Heat is the constraint both versions share. At 25 to 33 °C the bells open from the bottom of the spike upwards faster than they would in a cool room, and the scent that would otherwise last a week can be gone in a couple of days, so the basket wants a shaded spot indoors rather than a bright terrace. Humid air is on the arrangement's side, since neither the compost nor the block dries out quickly here.

Delivery along the west coast takes 90 to 180 minutes, covering Patong, Kata, Karon and Kamala together with Phuket Town, Rawai and Chalong, while villas, marinas and airport routes run on separate windows. From May to October the rain adds time and the hill roads add more of it in the evening, so we build that into the slot rather than quoting one figure all year. A planted basket travels better than a cut one on those routes, because the bulbs sit low and the weight is at the bottom of the arrangement.

We work 9 AM to 10 PM and orders start at 2200 THB, with payment by bank card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PromptPay, bank transfer or cash to the courier in baht. Thai orchids, chrysanthemums and tropical foliage go in around the spikes when the basket needs volume that does not add scent. Baskets with hyacinths in Phuket are worth ordering by naming the recipient's situation rather than the occasion, because a resident and a guest want two different objects here.
