Pink tulips: why ordering by the word rarely works
Pink in tulips is not one colour but a family. Inside it sit cool and warm tones, muted and open ones, dusty shades and something close to neon. The word pink on an order form covers all of them, which is exactly why the bunch that arrives sometimes fails to match what the buyer pictured.
The gap between a cool lilac pink and a warm salmon is visible from across a room, and catalogue photography tends to flatten precisely that difference.
How to specify the shade you mean
Three approaches beat any adjective.
- Name the variety. Pink tulips differ by cultivar, and a variety name is more precise than any description.
- Send a reference photograph, ideally taken in daylight rather than under a lamp.
- Say what the bouquet is being matched to: a dress, a room, another colour in an arrangement.
Naming the temperature of the colour helps too. A phrase like cool pink leaning towards lilac, or warm pink with an orange undertone, narrows the field faster than a list of names.
What opening does to pink
In pink varieties the difference between a closed bud and an open flower is more pronounced than it is in whites and yellows.
A closed bud shows the outer surface of the petal, which is usually darker and duller. An open flower shows the inner surface, which is lighter and cleaner in tone.
So a bunch of tight buds becomes paler and softer over three days. If the deep colour is wanted on the day of the handover, order partly open heads instead.
Bicolour pinks change most of all, because the white or cream stripe along the petal edge widens as the flower opens.
