New Year baskets in Phuket: the road first, the room second
A basket travels standing up and never lies down, which sounds like a small detail until the route includes a hill. Along the west coast the run takes 90 to 180 minutes, and Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Bang Tao and Surin all sit inside that window. Villas, marinas and airport routes have their own windows, mostly because the last stretch of those deliveries happens on foot with the basket held from underneath.
Evening traffic on the hill roads is the constant here. The rainy season runs May to October, and in both cases we add time to the route at the point of loading, since a basket cannot be hurried at the far end.
Air on the island sits between 25 and 33 °C, and an open weave lets all of it through. Foam in a basket gives up water faster than foam in a closed box, so we fill the tray to the rim before it leaves and ask for it to be topped up on arrival. Direct sun does more damage than any amount of rain. A basket standing against a wall in shade keeps its flowers for weeks. The same basket on an open terrace gives you a few days, and the side facing out goes first.

Care afterwards is short enough to say in three lines:
- Top the water up through the rim every day or two until the foam stops taking it.
- Keep the basket out of direct sun and away from an open terrace edge.
- Take any candles out before lighting them, and use a plate or a holder instead.

Where the format loses
Against a bouquet, whenever the recipient carries the gift onwards the same evening. A birthday dinner at a restaurant is the clearest example, since the basket then has to sit under a chair for two hours and travel home in a car boot.
Against a table arrangement, whenever the only free surface in the room is the dining table, because most baskets stand too tall and too wide for that and everybody at the table loses the sightline across it.
Against a potted plant, if the household is leaving the island for a fortnight. Foam dries out over that stretch. Nothing fixes it after the fact.
Its own case is just as clear. A basket belongs where the gift belongs to a room rather than to one pair of hands: a family villa, a shared office, a reception counter, the corner of a terrace that people walk around all evening.
A basket is furniture for a week.
Thai orchids and chrysanthemums carry that role best, since both stand for weeks and neither minds being looked at from every side. Imported roses cut short give the basket its colour. Hydrangeas fill width quickly and show a fingerprint just as quickly, so we keep them off the edge where hands reach. Seasonal peonies go in singly and near the middle, because a basket is seen from close range and an open peony takes up more room by the second day.
