Peony baskets in Phuket: the week after the doorbell
A peony basket changes shape after it is delivered, and that is the part most people are unprepared for. The flowers travel as tight balls and open on warmth, and an open head is roughly three times the width of a closed one. On an island this warm the sequence runs faster than the catalogue photograph suggests.
A good build leaves room for it. On the first day the arrangement looks slightly airy, with visible space between the balls, and by the third or fourth it has closed into the dome it was designed to be. If it arrives looking perfectly packed, the heads will crowd and bruise each other on the way there. That is the most useful thing to know before judging a basket at the door.
Orders start at 2200 THB. We work 9 AM to 10 PM. Payment goes by bank card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PromptPay, bank transfer or cash to the courier in baht.
What shortens the week is heat and water sitting in the wrong places. Three habits cover most of it:
- Keep it out of direct sun and away from the air conditioning stream.
- Top up the foam at the edge daily, in a thin stream, until it stops taking any.
- Lift spent heads out as they go and cover the gap with a leaf.
The last one matters more than it sounds. Peonies shed all at once rather than fading slowly, usually across a single afternoon, and inside a closed field of heads that happens out of sight. By the time the petals are on the table, the neighbours have been pressed against them for a day.
Peonies do not fade politely.
"Guests ask me to send a basket already open so it looks like the picture. Then they go out for two days, and the room does the opening for them."

A hole left by a stem is finished as a planting position. Foam does not seal itself, so a fresh flower pushed into an old socket finds no water and folds within the day. Cover it instead. One leaf taken from the same arrangement does the job and nobody looks twice.
Heat, rain and the road here
Air at 25 to 33 °C with island humidity works on a basket in two directions at once. Warmth drives the buds open at speed, and the exposed top of the foam gives up water faster than anyone expects. A cool corner slows both. A room on the west coast that catches the afternoon sun is the worst place for it, and a shaded shelf two metres away can add days. This is why we ask where the arrangement will actually stand before we decide how tight the buds should be.
The west coast runs 90 to 180 minutes, with separate windows for villas, marinas and airport routes. During monsoon showers between May and October we add time to the route, and evening traffic on the hill roads does the same. A basket takes that better than wrapped stems do, since the flowers drink the whole way. Nothing in it has to be put into water when it lands.
Seasonal peonies arrive in batches, so the stage of the bud is whatever the delivery gave us that morning. Hydrangeas and imported roses hold the shoulders of the build, chrysanthemums sit firm near the rim, and tropical foliage covers the foam at the edge. Thai orchids go into this format less often, since they carry their own line and a basket is built around mass.
Peony baskets in Phuket suit resort birthdays and anniversaries for one reason. Nobody has to do anything when the arrangement is handed over. Rosewood Phuket, The Slate Phuket, Trisara, Banyan Tree Phuket and Veranda Resort Phuket all take it assembled. Tell us the resort, the hour and how long it will stand before anyone sees it, and we set the buds tighter or looser to match.
