Peony boxes in Phuket: why a good one looks half empty
An open peony head is about three times the width of the ball it came from. Everything about the way a box is packed follows from that one number. A florist who fills every gap on the day of assembly builds something that destroys itself by the third day.
So a well built box arrives with visible space between the flowers. It closes into a solid dome as the buds go, and that dome is what the catalogue photograph shows.
Judge it after two days. The doorstep look is the one the format was designed for, and it tells you almost nothing about the build underneath. What does tell you something is the spacing: heads touching at the rim on day one will be pressing bruises into each other by day three. Room between them is the mark of a florist who has done this before. It is also why two boxes holding the same number of stems can look like different orders on the first evening.

What a box survives
Boxes travel better than any other format for these flowers. Every stem is fixed in wet foam, so nothing swings and nothing rubs against a neighbour. The rim protects the outer heads from knocks at the sides. A courier carries it flat in one hand and hands it over without unwrapping anything.
At the other end it needs nothing.
The island half of it
The west coast runs 90 to 180 minutes, with separate windows for villas, marinas and airport routes. Monsoon showers between May and October add time to a route, and evening traffic on the hill roads does the same. A box absorbs both without complaint. Wrapped stems in the same van are counting the hours until somebody puts them in water. That difference decides more orders here than any question about variety.
Resort birthdays and anniversaries keep the format busy. Rosewood Phuket, The Slate Phuket, Trisara, Banyan Tree Phuket and Veranda Resort Phuket take a box in and set it down as it is. Nobody at the resort has to find a container, and nobody has to explain the arrangement to a guest who is out at the beach. Villas and marinas run on their own delivery windows, and a box sitting on a table there for an afternoon is doing exactly what it was built for.
Hours run 9 AM to 10 PM. An airport arrival is the other regular job, since a box travels in one hand and never has to be held upright in a car.
Seasonal peonies come in batches, so the stage of the bud belongs to the delivery rather than to the order. Hydrangeas and imported roses go in around them, cut short and set firm near the rim, while chrysanthemums hold the outer edge of the field. Tropical foliage covers the foam and does nothing else. Thai orchids go into a box rarely, since the line of the stem is most of what they offer.
Air at 25 to 33 °C with island humidity speeds up the whole sequence. A box that would stay airy for four days somewhere cooler can close in two here, and a room in full afternoon sun closes it faster still. We plant a little looser for that reason on anything ordered in advance.
