Fifteen roses in Phuket: what the wrapping has to survive

Fifteen stems left loose splay into a fan within a minute of walking. The outer petals then rub against a sleeve for the rest of the journey, and on this island the journey is rarely short. A firm cone of heavy paper holds the shape and keeps the heads from grinding against each other.

Kraft holds its form best and shrugs off damp stem ends, though it is coarse and does not suit every shade. Softer matte paper photographs better and creases the moment anyone leans on it. Cellophane protects most of all and condenses inside, which in a humid tropical climate is a real cost rather than a theoretical one. Ribbon is doing work too, since a properly tightened knot keeps the binding point from twisting on the road. Whatever the material, more than three layers turns the bouquet into a parcel and hides the flowers from everyone but the person looking straight down at it.

Rain decides more of this than temperature does. Between May and October we pack against water arriving from outside as well as against the heat that was there all along.

Where it is going changes the paper

A run of 15 roses in Phuket along the west coast takes 90 to 180 minutes, and villas, marinas and airport routes get their own windows. During monsoon showers and evening hill traffic we add route time before quoting anything. The build follows the route.

• Patong, Kata or Karon: a short coast run, and kraft holds its shape the whole way.
• A villa above Kamala or Surin: hill roads and steps, so the cone goes on tighter and the ribbon is knotted twice.
• An airport arrival: the bouquet has to clear a terminal in one hand, which means a shorter cut and a narrower wrap than the same count would get for a house.
• A dinner by the sea or a small wedding, where the flowers are handed over in front of other people and the outer ring of heads gets looked at properly, so the wrapping is built to open cleanly in one movement.

Rawai, Bang Tao and Mai Khao come off the same list of addresses, and none of them changes the flowers, only the packing around them. Thai orchids, chrysanthemums, hydrangeas and tropical foliage all take the damp better than an imported rose does. At this count the rose travels alone, so everything protecting it is paper, ribbon and time. That makes the wrapping the part of the order worth being specific about.

The last two minutes

Paper that survived the coast road can still lose its shape in those last two minutes, which is why the cone is built to hold rather than to photograph well folded.

Say where the flowers are going and at what hour they need to be standing there. If the address is a villa or a marina we quote its own window. And if the handover happens outdoors in the rainy season, we build for the walk from the car, which is the stretch nobody plans for.
